I need to replace the seal on my 9n PTO. I got the shaft assembly out but can't figure out how to get to the seal. Can someone give me some pointers.

Robert

P.S. I have an FO-4 manual on order but it has not arrived yet.

Robert, is the shaft out of tractor yet? on early 9n you should have a spring - pin - cap -seal- sleave
if no spring type you have later style seal, they make 2 types?
need more info please

Bob,

Yes, I did have the shaft out. What you describe with the spring-pin-cap is what I have. I got those off just fine but that is where I got stumped. Your further thoughts would be appreciated.

Robert

Hi Robert,

I replaced the PTO seal on my 49 8N soon after I got it over 26 years ago. I didn’t have the luxury of getting advice from this board back then or even a FO-4 manual. This is what I did; I took a hammer, small screwdriver and an awl to cut into the old seal to start digging and lifting the old seal out. Once I got an edge to grab a hold of, I took a pair of pliers to finish pulling the old seal out. It came out fairly easy. (Be careful not to scar the seal housing). Then, I gently tapped the new seal into place. I never removed the PTO shaft from the tractor.

This procedure may be unorthodox, but it worked and the seal is still holding up well. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

I just replaced the seal on my 52 8N and it was a 1 3/8" shaft that I put in about 10 years ago. You need to take out the locking ring(9N-754) and then put a wood block on the floor amd hold the end that goes into the transmission and hit the other end on the wood on the floor. It should come off with one good bang, Don't ask how this happened. The New Holland (NH) dealer is probably still talking about it!
The seal can be got at NH for about $13, it is to much but that is the way it goes. I used a big socket (1 15/16)to drive the seal out and back in. Make sure you clean the area where the seal goes. I lubricated the seal with 30 wt. oil ad STP.
The 9N is different that the 8N but the parts manual on P65 (1975 version) shows the detail of the parts. I also cleaned the whole shaft and bearing and put some rebuilding greas on the bearing and then painted the outside part.
I hope it works out.
Alex

Alex,

Thanks much. Could you tell me more about the locking ring. As I look at the mounting plate from the outside side (where the short part of the shaft is), I see what might be a ring. It has two places on it where a tool might fit to unscrew it. If that is what you are talking about, what would you use to turn it?

Yes, the ring can be removed before removing the seal. As has been said a screwdriver and neddlenose pliers will get the locking ring out. Have fun and be carefull. Alex

I just replaced the seal in my '53 Jubilee. I think the setup is the same. The lock ring that you need to remove is on the tractor side of the PTO collar. It's real easy to see and pop out with a couple of screw drivers. Once it's out just use the bang the shaft on a board procedure outlined by Alex and the seal can be punched out of the collar toward the outside end of the shaft and replaced.
