Front axle bushing

I noticed a tinging sound when I was using the tractor, it wasn't making it a half hour before. Here, I think the axle pivot bushing came out; it appeared that there were welds on it before to keep it in place.
What kind of wear and tear could have happened while the tractor was being used? Is this bushing a 'must be in or something will be damaged' or can it be without the bushing for a while?
Anyone have a good idea on how to get it back in without tearing the whole front end off?

Thanks for any help.

I reworked the front end on my 2N. I replaced the worn king pin and bushing and repaired cracks in the axel and support assy.
The early N's didn't have anything holding the dang bushing in place! The axel floated and, after the bushing was worn, flopped around on the king pin. Spacers, one about 5/8" and the others about 1/8", were added to the 8N. Instructions said to add the as needed to hold the axel in the proper position front to back. Good thing those spacers.
I was given a couple bags of machinery bushings at the spring and axel shop. They are called machinery bushing on the bag but they look like a big ol washer is all. The bushing were the proper ID for the king pin, near 3" OD and about 10 to an inch. I must have 14 of those bushing holding the axel in the proper location but there is no flopping around up there and the bushing stays in place.

You have to leave some room for fore and aft movement or you will be putting pressure on some other part.

lift the front end off the ground with a jack and move the axle up and down on one side and see how it moves fore and aft on the pin. Or at least wants to - if you have it shimmed so it can't.

I got it shimmed like it was an 8N!

The Ford 8N tractor front axle must be allowed to move fore and aft on the center pivot pin.

Pick up one front wheel (like going over a bump) and watch the axle as it moves on the center pin.

If you have it shimmed so tight that it can't move, your front 'suspension' will be in a bind.

With no bushing on a front mount Dist. you risk breaking the #2 nipple on the cap, the other side you risk breaking the lower hose connection on the radiator plus I think it can flex enough to risk hitting the fan blades. I just bought one for mine, it cost $4.75 and not that hard to put in. Of course my tractor is all apart and going back together wonderfully.
