Dearborn two bottom plow 2-14 questions

Hi fellas,

Just got my first Dearborn 2-14 plow implement from the original owner of the tractor that I ran into recently at a swap meet. I wanted to get some of the implements with the tractor when I purchased it, but at the time (with my wife's patience and frugality being tossed out the window) I decided against it. Not to mention, I simply didn't have the extra money, nor the need for implements at that time. The plow is rusted but in good shape overall and has all of the original parts & is very solid. It even has the original Dearborn equipment tag in place.

I know that the 8N is supposed to be quite gifted at running a 2-14 bottom plow. Can anyone offer some advice on the following:
1. -Can anyone share any pics of a completely restored and painted Dearborn 2-bottom plow?
2.
-Can anyone share any insight as to the restoration process and access to replacement parts if needed? (was told I might need to get a new set of points if I was going to plow alot of ground - Can someone this in detail??)
3.
-What is the proper settings/technique for using this plow with the 8N? (ground speed/depth/settings) - My soil in LA is pretty soft (no rocks) and was originally plowed for strawberries and corn. (what I intend to grow a very small crop of probably next year)
4.
-Currently the field that I intend to use is just being cut with a rotary cutter. Do I need to till/disc it before plowing?

I apologize for my "newbie" farming questions in advance, but I am simply trying to keep the "farming" spirit alive and well for my family (my 2 children) and also it makes a nice addition to my 8N tractor legacy.

In any case, thanks so much for any insight or assistance. God Bless.

Andy

Assuming that Ploughman sent you some good info I won't get long winded here but will address the part of you question about discing before plowing.

I really depends on your plow and the amount of weeds and "trash" you have on the ground.

If your plow is equipped with coulters you really shouldn't have to disc at all beforehand.

If you don't have coulters you'll just have to hook her up and plow and then if is seems she is pulling to hard then you might want to switch to the disc and hit once or twice before returning to plowing.

Is your plow a 101 Series?? If it is then I actually have the original manual and could scan pages that you have questions about if you wish.

Good luck plowing!!!

Thanks for the additional info. Was it a regular practice for the rolling coulters and jointers to be missing from plows? Did they wear out or did people just remove them and toss them behind the barn? Any good places to locate replacement rolling coulters/jointers for a 2-14 Economy Dearborn plow?

So, am I to assume that the coulters acted as miniture discs to prep the ground for the plowing? Thanks!

Andy..... ..the plow's rolling coulter is like a big pizza slicer. Its about 14-16" dia and makes a vertical cut ahead of the plow share. Rolling coulters are used to cut trash, roots, reduce draft, and to leave a uniform furrow wall. A rolling coulter should run as near to the shin of the moldboard as possible.

Lotta times the rolling coulter is removed because it gets dull and sometimes gathers trash and plugs up the plow. Sometimes the coulter is removed because there is no trash to cut thru. Its hard telling what might have happened to the coulters.

FYI....shin is leading vertical edge of plow, share is horizontal under the soil slicer, moldboard it large curvy thing that rolls the soil slice and buries the trash.

And another beginners ploughmans mistake is plowing too slow, you need speed to roll the soil slice. 2nd gear and WOT (wide open throttle) and if you don't have enuff power, don't plow so deep. Let your 8N's draft control (little handle under seat should be horizontal for plowing) keep the plow draft constant for the engine's governor to work properly..... ....Dell

Baby is doing ok. Both of us are acutally sick with cough/cold/sinus stuff right now. My throat is sore and I can hardly speak. (much relief to most of my friends and wife I am sure! grin)
He just turned 8 months yesterday so he is getting up there though! Pretty soon he will be running around throwing my tractor tools into the pond or something!

In any case, thanks so much!!
Andy
