Had drift down on my lift and did the usual checks, rams a leakin. Took cover off got piston out and heres what I found. Cylinder is "lightly" scored, such that a finger nail drug across bore marks one can just detect them. Rings gap at .030" in the bore and piston allows a .009" feeler between'er and the bore with no rings installed. What say ye oh wise ministers of hydraulics as to best refurbish?

Lightly hone and then replace the piston with one for the NAA and the rubber and leather rings.

Be sure to replace the three gaskets that are under the ram cylinder when you go back with it.

Don't leave out the two small round gaskets. Fixed!

Rick,
Do like Jim and Fessman said. One trick I got from I beleive Fast Ed in Ohio was to smear JBWeld in the scorings , let it set up and then use a hone. My '51 had same problem, only deeper.
Did the JB Weld thing, installed new NAA piston with o-ring and now it will hold up a 5' hog for about three hours.
Later,

Like Fessman said. If you want your lift to stay up for days at a time get the NAA piston and seal. Mine was much like you described. I honed the cyl and went back with the rings. Mine stays up for 30 mins to 1 hour, that is quite long enough for Me. I lower it to the ground after use anyway. I can see it dripping out with the inspection cover off.

Rick,

Now that you have it apart you can change the piston to the improved NAA style. This style utilizes an o-ring for the seal. I have found that the o-ring style works on slightly scored cylinder walls, with no leaking.
