Hi,

My 8n has no power when it warms up. I have to let it rev up with the clutch in so I can get it to back up a foot if I am lucky. Then winds down and have to wait until it revs up again to get going. I have new plugs, new coil (read somewhere in here that could be a bad coil), new wires, carb has been running a little rich but seems to be a little better after some adjustments, points were new but have another to try. What next?

Thanks
Pat

#3 spark plug wire kept coming loose on the distributor cap. A little electrical tape on the cap and the boot holds good.

Thanks for all your replies.

Pat , I dont see where you replaced the condenser along with the points, That battery ( if still 6 volts ) is positive ground, right ? Have you tryed jompering around the ignition switch ? New coils right out of the box ( Made in China ) are sometimes defective. Fuel flow could also be a problem to check for .

Pat..... ..anytime someone replaces the sparkies wires and then complains about low power, wanna guess what the problem is?

The N-Engine is sooo gooood, it'll run fine with sparkies miss-wired, until you try to get some power outta it.

Fireing order is 1,2,4,3 CCW. 4-nipple frontmount or 5 nipple sidemount the same. Ususally its the 3 & 4 that are reversed..... ...Dell

Hi,

I checked on that as I did that once before. They are in the right firing order. Could the distributor need to be replaced? It was not done when it was rebuilt a couple of years ago.

Thanks
Pat

The only thing I can add to Dell's post is that the advance weights in the distributor could be gunked up or worn.

Pat..... ...if you're really confident that your ignition firing order is correct 1,2,4,3 CCW then the next likely suspect is the mysterious and dreaded "governor".

Get out there and hand manipulate your carb linkage the governor should "fight you". If doubtful, un-snap the springloaded carb to gov rod (eather end) and manipulate the carb some more until you are satisfied the carb is responding to your hand linkage input. The carb governor arm should also be moving in response to your hand carb input.

The other "lack of power" suspect is low engine compression. Since you claim a recent engine rebuild, that's probably not the cause BUT sticky intake valves could be a "cause". But I doubt it because you are not complaining about "hard starting". Never hurts to do a compression check..... .....Dell
