6 volt generator producing 12 volts

Maybe someone has some ideas about this. I have a 9N with what appears to be a 6 volt ingnition system. The generator is the old 3 brush type and should give out a little over 6 volts, but when I had it "reconditioned" the man at the shop said it was a 12 volt generator and that I should get myself a 12 volt battery. Since I just bought a brand new 6 volt battery, I don't want to change now. Is it possible that the previous owner of this tractor was able to fool with the brushes or the brush ring in order to increase the output to double its voltage? Many thanks in advance.

I would take any future electrical work to another shop.

Reid..... .....that is what the "3rd brush" is all about, control the 9N genny volts output so you don't "overcharge" the 6 volt battery and boil out the acid and warp the plates. That is the ONLY voltage regulation your 9N has, manual adjust the 3rd brush so that you ampmeter shows about 3 amps charge when running about 1/2 throttle.

Actually, some of the 3rd brush gennys can do about 17 volts without a load. Anysort of a load sucks the volts down, headlights, ignition, even charging a battery is a "load" to the genny. As I said, adjust 3rd brush for about 3 amp charge at 1/2 throttle.

It can only output 11 amps MAX at 6 volts which is not very much, considering that the ignition sucks 3 amps and headlights 4 amps each. One of the big causes of 6 volt battery death, driving with headlights on.

The 1-wire 3rd brush genny is "crude" but works .....IF..... the tractor driver is paying attention..... ....Dell

Who reminds you of the 6 volt mantra: "keep'em clean, bright, and tight"

I think that a 6 volt generator can be converted to produce 12 volts. There are also some real 12 volt generators (like the one on my 59 Dodge) that look just like a 6 volt.

I would go through the system on the tractor and make sure it is a real 12 volt conversion, and then either decide to keep it 12 volts or convert it back to 6 volts. You will have to stick with one or the other-don't "mix and match".

To change the 12 volt generator to 6 volts might be pricey.

I have one that has always kept my 12 volt charged for 12 or 13 years no trouble at all.It is the easiest way to convert if you have the 3rd brush adjustment.Works well with the lights on also. Also have the positive ground and the old cutout, and 12/6 resistor(Echlin) in the line going to the coil. No Balist resistor. The only trouble I might have had is 2 starter bendix in 13 years.... R.M. In AL.
