Hello,

I recently ripped all the old wiring out of my tractor and installed a custom wiring harness, errr, homemade wiring harness. My 8n tractor is 12V. I followed the diagram, but I'm having a problem with my solenoid. My solenoid has four poles, two large ones on each side and two small ones on top. First the two large poles…….. one pole is where my “+” battery cable connects and also my “+” wire from ammeter. The other large pole is attached to a homemade bracket and is bolted to my starter. The other two small poles are labeled “I” and “R”. I wired my started push button that’s located on the tranny shift plate to the “I” pole. No luck starting the tractor. However, I can get a set of pliers and using the handle touch both large poles and the tractor cranks. What is the deal? I don’t think my solenoid is for my tractor, and it is not intuitively obvious what I should do to wire the solenoid…………………… Help.

To best correct your problem it would probably be best to understand the purpose and operation ot the solenoid. The solenoid is a relay and the purpose is to allow the controll of the large starter current by a remote switch(the one on the shift lever). The two small terminals are the ends of the operate coil. The large terminals are the path for the starter; From your comments you have the large terminals correct. The coil requires battery on one terminal ground on the other. So trace the connections thru. Is the starter switch connected to the battery OR ground somewhere? You said you have already connected the starter switch to the 'I' pole of the solenoid so now all you need to do is decide if you need to connect the 'R' terminal to battery OR ground. Just do whats necessary to make a complete circuit. The polarities don't matter as the last guy proved. It's your call if you want to aquire a 'standard' replacement(with one terminal and internally grounded) or use what you have. One last bit of advice for future projects. Don't 'rip' out the wires. Trace them and make your own diagram then remove and replace the wires one at a time. The time spent will pay returns later.

The "I" on the little pole of the solenoid means Ignition. It is what lets full battery voltage go to the ignition coil during cranking.

The "R" on the other small pole is for "Relay" or or solenoid which a solenoid really is a "Relay"
The Relay post has to be energized with positive battery voltage or + voltage when wired with 12 volts.

There are solenoids however that have the I and R on them and what I just described does not bear the truth in how these odd ball solenoids work. On these odd solenoids one of the small posts can be wired to a + positive hot wire and the other can go then to the original N starter grounded switch on the transmission.

Since it was working before this is probably the type solenoid you have.

Yes, positive volatage on the I terminal will energize the relay, this however will bypass the starter button and in my opinion is a safety hazard since it can now be started in gear.

Change that to the R terminal.

The deal is that you have the wrong solenoid. You have the standard automotive type. You need to purchase a N solenoid. It only has one small terminal. N soleloids are backwards and the terminal completes a ground connection through the starter button.

Yes, I know the solenoid is the wrong type, but the solenoid was being used before I rewired the tractor. I want to go back and use it again, but I don't know how to wire it. However, if I really need to use the correct solenoid, I will.

On your solenoid, the low side of the relay coil is internally grounded. Although, it can be Mickey Moused to work by isolating the solenoid, get the correct one.
