R.M., I've had much success using Drione Dust. You spray it into their holes then plug it with a small cork. Kills the bees before they hatch. I got the insecticide, duster bottle and corks from U-Spray Inc. (www.bugspray.net)

We've got a bunch that are driving me crazy!! I wake up at night dreaming about them.

We live in a log home and therefore have exposed wood as the major structural component of the house - you can see my concern!

I've tried spraying liquid Sevin in the holes and on the wood - seems only to get them wet and mad! I've had limited success with hornet spray (seems only to kill the ones that it touches - no residual affect). Believe it or not, WD-40 (only thing I had with a spray tube to get into the holes!) seems to suffocate them on contact and also discourages them from entering the holes ... temporarily.

The kids are entertained seeing their father playing "beedminton" with a badminton racket. The distinctive "ping" that you get with a well placed hit sounds nice and is therapeutic!! Fortunately, I don't have any neighbors to be concerned about my antics!

Anybody got any suggestions? Do they make traps for these things?

Thanks,

Ken C. (VA)

They make simple traps for hornets and wasps.

Carburetor cleaner works much better than WD-40.
It works on Black Widow spiders too! grin

The wasps get into the cracks in the ends of the logs in my home too. But how do you get up a story and a half and still feel like spraying the little critters?

N - joy.

I know of two ways to deal with them.
One is to paint everything white.
The other you might like better.
They sell a product called "Combat" to kill roaches.
It comes in a syringe type applicator.
Get some of those and caulk the holes with it.
I had a bad problem with the bees and did that.
I came back a few hours later and saw about six bees fluting on the ground.
I did find a few days later a few holes that had gotten opened back up.
I recaulked them and now the bees are almost gone.
PS. Works good for roaches too.
