I am posting this for a friend who has a 640 and there wasn't a reply on the Ford side of the discussion board.

Here are the problems:

Lift lever in down position. Tractor idling. Sometime the rear lift will go up on it's own although lever is in the down position. Sometimes with the lever up it will lift fast and sometimes halfway.

What is causing these lift problem?

Thanks for Ken.

It sounds to me like you have linkage problems with the tractor lift. Also it may be that the control valve is sticking in it's bore. This can be caused by water in the oil and or some sort of foriegn material in the oil. Probably would be a good idea to lightly hone the control valve bushing bore and also to polish the control valve itself.

Look for anything loose. I have seen the pins in the position linkage come part way out and this will make the linkage bind and do all sorts of crazy things.

These lifts have what is known as an unloading valve and it is what actully directes the oil to the ram cylinder and not so much the control valve as in the N tractor. This valve also can stick or the O ring in it go bad from wear and tear.

I would suggest that you get a gasket and O ring rapair kit from some after market place and then order my adjusting booklet with the feeler gauge and a new cam follower pin for the Hundred series tractor. See the link below.
