Quick story: Went to visit my folks few weeks ago, and on the way back I saw a red-n-gray 9N for sale by the road. Stopped to look, and saw it had one of those rare lift warning chains attached to the hyd. control. Now, this was after dark, on a lightly traveled road, the house was a long ways back, and I had a wrench in the truck. Temptation was felt.

"Character is what you are in the dark" as a wise man once said, and I smiled to myself, got back in the truck and drove away.

Drove past that tractor again Sunday, on the way to my folks again, and kept going. While there, stopped to see my Dad's neighbor, who is also an "N" fellow, and he mentioned in passing that he'd found another trinket in an old box in his garage that I might be interested in. Yep, sure enough, it was another warning chain. Offered him a fair price and he refused, saying it was only worth half that. Got one of my own now, very cheap.

The moral of the story is obvious, and believe me, I said a prayer of thanks on the way home.

Psalm 37: "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart."

You know, speaking of 'wathcing us'.. that must be a full time job keeping us tractor people from really hurting ourselves...

Seems like at least once a week or so, someone writes in a post about a really close call they or an aquanitance just had..

I wonder how many people are on this sub? maybee 600? and what? about 100-150 regular posters?

So that is a pretty high accident/membership rate.. guess we really need to keep safety in mind around these hunks o' iron.

Somebody's watchin'...that's for sure. I suppose this might be the sort of testimony to which you refer...

I'm working on an old beater Polaris ATV for my son to ride to the barns and back. It's up on a 2-wheel utility trailer (16" wheels BTW, so kinda high). Saturday morning, I was reinstalling the transmission and decided I needed to be up on the trailer to lay across the machine and reach down the other side. Did I mention that the trailer isn't hooked to anything?--just laying tongue down. Well anyway, I straddled the trailer wheel on one side and keeping balanced laid across the machine to reach a bolt. You can probably guess what's coming. I shifted my weight (not an insignificant amount, BTW) and the trailer immediately pitched backwards - tongue in the air. I flew off to the rear onto one of my son's bikes (that hurts) and then the 4-wheeler rolled off the trailer on top of me (that hurts more). No serious damage at this point...everything a little sore and hand kind of crunched..maybe sprained. Wife and son came to see why I hollered and found me getting out from under all of it. Not wanting to let them know quite how stupid I was, I shook it off and asked them to help me roll the ATV back onto the tipped-up trailer. No problem, got it back on, chocked behind the wheels and I went around and pulled the tongue of the traier back down and dropped it on the ground where it had been. About that time the ATV rolled off the front of the trailer and smacked into me pushing me into the back of my truck just ahead of this circus act. No damage but wife and son are now convinced I should be institutionalzied for my own protection. They may be right! In fact, I'm pretty sure they're right. BTW, I'm the one usually putting Dell to shame preaching safety...oh well..the thing's running and we're riding around on it...another way to kill someone!

I had something similar happen to me; He was watching me too. I was boiling maple sap on an outdoor setup I made. I had barrels of sap on a high trailer that I had unhooked from the tractor, siphoning the sap into the pan as it boiled. There was a space about 4' wide between the trailer and the redhot firebox the pan was on. Obviously not thinking ahead, I started emptying the barrels on the front end first. Luckily I wasn't in that space checking the syrup temperature, which had to be done about every ten minutes, when the trailer tipped up and sent the still-full barrels on the rear crashing into side of my "stove".

Reminds me of a quote I read off of a desk callander.. I can't recall the author of the quote, but it was something to the effect of:
"True higher thinking means being able to entertain a thought, without accepting it"

something like that.. your situation made me remember it.. kind of an ethics thing...you can think about it.. just don't do it.. etc..
I guess it is a good thing that people 'judge' us on our actions and not our thoughts... 'cause my wife would never stop slapping me otherwise...especially every time we pass a used tractor lot...
