My question, is my 8N big enough to use it for cutting, raking, and baling hay. I don't want to go out and buy the equip. if my 8N can't handle it. Thanks Alan

I've cut hay and raked with mine for 4 years now, and for 2 of those I've baled as well. There are really 2 important issues to understand: weight of the baler and live PTO.

The 8N will pull any "small" baler (older New Hollands, Massey Ferguson #3-10 are all ok). But even small balers weigh about as much as the tractor, which makes it exciting if you have many hills...you have to be *very* careful or you may not be able to stop going down hill, sort of like a big sled (ask me how I know).

A baler with its own engine is a good way to go, as it doesn't take any power off the PTO, but it is not necessary.

Live PTO makes baling lots easier with a PTO baler, but isn't essential either. The 8N doesn't have it. But if you start the baler going before you get to the windrow and keep the windrows fairly small you won't have a problem. Takes a little while to get the "knack" and a little longer to bale, but you can definately do it.

So if you are like me and just putting up a few tons of hay and don't need high production, the 8N works just fine. If you want to bale lots, then buy a bigger tractor with live PTO.

good luck,
Tom

we pulled a #7 new idea corn picker and wagon with ours. so i imagine it can. a neighbor had a NAA and pulled an A/c combine with it and did custom work. no it wont act or pull like a jd 4010 diesel but it can handle its own.the allis wd i have pulls a picker and wagon. it also handled a jd 14T baler just fine so i think the 8n should handle it too. worst thing about older tractors is not enough speeds. a slower gear and independent PTO would have been perfection on most older tractors!

My dad had a new holland baler that he had use for some time. I don't remember him having any trouble with the 8n operating it properly.

No Problem...if you can find an old AC Roto-Baler! Ford N was all we had back in the 50's and 60's. Did it all, mowing with the dreaded Dearborn Rear-mount sickle-blade mower, raking with a Nice Ferguson Side-Delivery Rake, baling with the AC Roto-Baler. Not a problem, except one had to take the tractor out of gear at every bale. AC Tractors had this 3rd gearshift that made it unnecessary. Yep, the little guy in the pic is me...;-).

The 8n is good for raking with a ground drive rake. You can run PTO tedder rakes with them also. A 3pt cutter can be used to mow and u might bale with it if u can find and fix an ancient baler with its own engine. If u wanna run a pto baler, you need a live PTO and at least 45 HP. The 8n has neither, it won't work. Get a more modern rig if u want a PTO baler. The 8n can be usefull, but it probably can't be your only hay tool. I use mine with a ground drive rake and also to pull hay wagons. For those puposes it can't be beat. Look into a 60-70's era Ford or JD with live PTO, 45 HP to bale, 65 HP with kicker, 80HP for round baler.
good luck

I baled 6 acres with a dearborn sidebar, 3 point rake and borrowed my amish friends JD w/gas engine. Didn't have wagon on behind though.
