OK, I rebuilt the lift ram cause it was a leakin and now it doesnt drip a bit, but the lift still drifts down when the PTO is disengaged or engine is off. Inspection now shows a slow steady stream of very fine bubbles(aeration) rising from the right side area of the pump just below the inspection cover opening. This doesnt sound like the pressure releif valve does it? I would think leakage from that would rise from the rear of the pump. Need wisdom on this, Thnx in advance RB

Rick,
Just to commiserate with you, I have the same exact condition as you describe. I don't believe it's the relief valve on mine. It's only got about 50 hours on it. I suspect bg is correct on the pump or chambers. I'll delve in this fall after mowing slows down.

Greg, I think I'm closer. Checked again with a mirror and it looks like the aerated fluid is coming up around the transfer tube, maybe leaking where it seats in the pump base? Cant find any info in the FO4 manual as to how it is held/sealed in place or how to replace. Any one know ? Thnx RB

It's only sealed in this area by the pump gasket.
At the top it's sealed by the top hyd cover gasket.

The transfer tube doesn't 'seat' per se in the pump at all - it is held into the main housing probably by friction. (driven in from the top I think, but I'm just guessing on that one)

I found it hard to believe such an arrangement would hold the 1500 - 2000 lbs pressure that could be created. But it works - when the gasket is good.

The gasket tends to get frayed when installing the pump because the pump has to be slid forward slightly once almost in place.

New pump gasket time.

N - joy.

Could be a cracked pump housing, bad safety valve or pump valves/seats, deteriorated gasket.
