Hello,

How many quarts will I need to paint for Ford 8n sheetmetal? The hood, fenders, grill, dog legs? I'm planning to use PPG Delstar 31657. Do you know if Tractor Supply Company has a color that matches this PPG color? Also, how much enamel hardner do I need to purchase? What about thinner?

Thanks.

Chigger had almost total surface rust, but no rust-through. Had her sheet metal sandblasted, primed with one coat and then painted with 2 "heavy" sprayed coats of TISCO Ford grey. Took 2.5 quarts and am very pleased with the results. The sheet metal will outlast me.

If spraying (which I recommend) your sheet metal follow the thinning instructions on the paint and what your paint rig says. All hardeners show how much to add to enamel paints, so follow those instructions.

On my engine tranny, etc. hand brushed TISCO Ford red right outta the can using a 2" brush followed by one light pass with a spray can and am completely amazed at how well she turned out. The brush strokes flattened out. With sheet metal off, all rust treated with a rust converter it took me about 6 hours to hand paint.

Hi Steve,

I too have discovered that painting the cast iron parts with a hand brush and then spraying lightly with a spray does a fine job. It leaves few, if any, brush marks and applies a good thick coat of protective paint. I have always used a pneumatic spray gun set up to paint the entire tractor until I repainted my Ford 2310 a few weeks ago. I tried the brush method for the cast iron components and sprayed the sheet metal and wheels and it turned out great. Rick H. Ga.

For what it's worth...
I haven't painted my fenders, yet, but I bought 1 quart (and I got it at Tractor Supply, they carry a 'Ford Gray' and a 'Ford Red', those were my colors) and had some left over, after painting the hood, dog legs and grill.

I used rattle can primer, from Wal-Mart...

When I purchased my paint I bought a gallon of grey, red and primer. Used about 2 quarts of primer, 1 1/2 quarts of grey and 2 quarts of red. I had about 1 quart of each put into spray cans for future touchups and I have about 1 quart leftover if I need to spray something too big for rattle cans.

As far as thinner and hardener, the paint label will give you the information that you need. I would stick with a "system" that works together. I used Martin Senior acrylic enamel from Napa and for a novice painter it was extremely easy to spray and went on nearly perfect.

The Vo-Tech school that is painting the metal work on my 8n ordered 2 qts. of gray and 1 pint of red, for the dash and the support, from Sherwin Williams. As for hardner I have absolutley no idea. If it matters they are painting mine with polyurethane acrylic enamel. The shop teacher said that it was easy to paint and extremely durable.
Hope this helps and good luck. Post a pic when you get it done.
