Finally had my first "tractor experience" today on my '51 8N: I brush-hogged a tiny fraction of my 5 acres! My wife is amazed -- she thought it would take me a year to get it running.

I just wanted to give a big THANK YOU to all the participants on this board, and to Yesterday's Tractors. (I didn't actually ask many questions here, but that's only because you folks have already answered most of them in the archives.)

I'm amazed how the people here are able to answer extremely basic questions and extremely complicated questions without making anyone feel stupid for not knowing. For example, not long ago someone asked how to get his brush hog hooked up without leaving the rear wheel hanging in the air, and one of the local experts (Dell, I think) mentioned that you need an adjustable top link.

Well, gosh. I'd been staring at my 8N and my new Bush Hog trying to figure out how they were going to link together. EVERYONE KNOWS you need a top link, which is why it isn't mentioned in any of my 8N manuals or in the Bush Hog manual. I did not have a clue.

So thanks again, folks. I couldn't have done it without you.

Well Bill, give it time and you "Will" be Flamed for not knowing, trust me!

You might want to consider a "Chain" instead of a "Top link" for your brush hog, most mowers have a slot or hinge at the top to allow for uneven ground, but with a top link if you drive through a good size dip or ditch you could break or bend something on the mower.

Keep in mind that top links are for plows, scoops or anything else that might use draft control. And that you should use a chain for anything you trailer like a mower, boom poll etc.
HTH

er...uh...it would be intuitively obvious that you don't know what you're talking about...UNDERSTAND!!!!

What part of "making anyone feel stupid for not knowing" don't you understand? UNDERSTAND!!!

Why is it so difficult for you to grasp the concept that so many people on this board are far inferior than someone that's superior and has earned the right to bash us stupid grunts. UNDERSTAND!!!

LMAO,
respectfully yours

dave and others,
The idea of using a chain for/in place of top link was discussed here about a year ago, and one safety issue that came up was that the tractor would be supported from the rear by the toplink in case it would start to flip backwards (such as mowing up a steep hill).
I would like to add that the possibility of the chain getting caught in the PTO shaft in such a case, or coming unhooked at either end and falling onto the PTO shaft could create a really dangerous situation (imagine being WHAPPED by a piece of chain at 540 rpm!!!).
I would recomend altering the top link bracing on the hog with a slot like you referred to, if the mower doesn't already have a slot or hinged linkage to allow the hog to float over uneven terrain.
Let's keep things safe out there.
JMHO,

dave,
I have to agree with you about not backflipping in the first place. Always figured the best way to run a tractor is with all fours on the ground.
LOL,

Very good point "But", there was also some discussion years and years ago on this subject (I missed the one you are talking about)in that discussion there was talk that in a back flip that the 3 point would probably fail and break from the great force of a back flip? I guess the deal is here, best not to Back flip in the first place (-:

Yes sir, those archives are great.
But information is only as good as the people who provide it. And this site continues to amaze me on the amount of good, reliable info, on a variety of topics.
Best dang site on the web.

Mr Bill with you having so little experience with tractors it is double important that you take a primer on safety. Please do an internet search along with a YT archives search on tractor and impliment safety and review the stuff until you know it 2nd nature.
This farm iron is so damn unforgiving.
