Howdy Fella's!

I'm having a problem- my tractor is quitting on me after running a little while- I believe it is flooding out. I'll leave it sit a while- go back to it- and it'll start and run. I have the mixture and idle adjusted reasonably well- the only other thing I can think of is to bend the little tab on the float that props up the needle in the seat, so it cuts the fuel off sooner- is this right? Is there any other thing that could be causing the flooding? HELP- this is driving me nutz and the grass is getting high!

Could it be a plugged gas tank vent hole that is causing a vacuum to be pulled on the tank therefore restricting gas flow. When you let it sit the pressure in the tank slowly increases to atmospheric and it again starts. If flooding out it would generally start to puff black smoke.

A blocked tank vent is something I had not considered- but I will definitely check that!

It's funny too- because it doesn't puff blck smoke- or stumble or miss or anything when it quits- it just dies as if you turned the switch off.

A simple 50 year-old tractor is making a monkey of me.....I'd hate to work on anything new and complex!

That sure sounds like something electrical rather than fuel related. Time+heat=no electrical contact.

It could be restricted flow of gas. when the carb. is full runs til emptied. sits and fills back up.

... some thing in the gas tank pluging the flow of gas... check the three filters too. Tom

Thanks guys....but the fuel flow seems good (started right up when I reinstalled the carb) and the tank is clean- especially since I removed the dead mouse from it when I first got the tractor! (I didn't have this problem when the mouse was in there- maybe i'll have to get a new mouse!)

....uh-oh....here comes PETA!

It sounds more like one of the three time/heat related stall issues:

1. Runs a couple minutes and dies-condensor.
2. Runs about 15 minutes and dies-ignition switch.
3. Runs about 45 minutes and dies-front mount coil.

All three seem to cure themselves after a cool down period.

Mike- I like that Dodge stake truck on your site! (and I'm not even a Dodge fan!)

Hmmmm....I already replaced the condenser. Usually runs longer than 15 minutes....but I could try jumping around iggy switch.

It's either the coil or the carb. My coil is not a front mount- it's from NAPA with the built-in resistence for 12V....new about nine months ago. Carb was also rebuilt nine months ago- I opened her up last week, to try and cure this problem- and lost the float needle- so had to buy a new needle/seat- thought I might get lucky, and it'd cure problem. Engine runs like a top- mint- just quits for the first time after half-hour or so....and then, on subsequent tries, quits sooner and sooner.

Thanks,

"Hmmmm....I already replaced the condenser."

Condensers have been known to be bad right out of the box. It could also have gone bad already.

But it does sound more like the coil - every time I've had condenser trouble, the engine still ran, although badly.

Instead of checking the carb for gas flow next time it quits, immediately open the gas cap. If you hear air entering the tank then you may have a clogged vent. By the time you get to the carb to check it, the party clogged vent has allowed enough gas through to fill the carb back up.

Well check the flow to the carb. Turn off the fuel, remove fuel line from the fitting that turns into the carb, turn on the fuel and look for a full-pipe flow. Watch it for a few seconds, steady and full-pipe. If not then flow it restricted upstream. Remove that fitting in the carb and clean the screen.
If it's flooding you will generally see fuel in the throat of the carb and fuel dripping out the bottom. When my N floods it doesn't flood a little bit.
