My 49 8n has a hour meter in the RH side of the hood that looks vintage. Around the outer edge of the dial face it says "John W Hobbs-Springfield Illinois" in a vintage looking font.It appears to be electricaly driven, but the wires were cut prior to my ownership. Does anyone know if this was a dealer accessory for 8Ns prior to the gov. driven mechanical units? Maybe a common after market accessory? Just curious.

What a coincidence - I took the exact same meter off my '50 8N just last night! Same condition too!

It was definately an after market add on. The guy that installed it took a 2" chunk of sheet metal (like a shark bite complete with teeth marks) from the lower left edge of the instrument panel to attach a bolt-on mounting hole.

Now I have to do some serious sheet metal work to fill in the missing chunk and fashion a curved flange to match original contour of the instrument panel. Thought I might make an insert and braze it in then fill with a body filler. Any thoughts on this repair?

I think you are on the right track. Perhaps you can get the shat from the opposite side, and approximate the conture of the bend. Flashing may even work jbwelded to the back of the dash.. then fill/epoxystick/bondo the front for a smooth union, then using epoxy putty or bondo to build up 'bent' edge. If you have access to the sheet metal though.. the brasing would work fine too.
Whatever you do, get pics for us.
Though I like to use as little filler as possible, and return the metal to near correct form, sometimes we cant get around it.

There was a fair sized tree-damage- grizzled dent in the metal on my NAA.. hammered it out with a wood block, filled sanded, sanded, sanded... now that it is painted.. I can't even tell where the damage was... unless I cheat and pop the hood and look around ...
again, good luck!

As Zane points out.. it could just be aftermarketed sometime along the way... even if installed in the 60's, it would still look 'vintage' today, 40 years later.

To my knowledge the N tractor never had an electrical hour meter. An electrical hour meter can be mounted on any battery operated engine and the meters can be had from many manufacturers.

I was looking for an excuse to tell this. I have known this particular 1952 8n since 1960. The owner died at age 85 several years ago. I knew it was immaculate and was never outside at night, planted a few acres of corn every year and a garden. The tach quit working and his son wanted a new one. The tach shows 2385 hours and I have no doubt that it is correct except for a few hours this year until I could replace it. NOTHING is worn.
