I just installed new bearing cones and cups in my '52 8N bevel pinion bearing carrier. I was able to borrow an inch/pound rolling torque wrench and torqued to 15 inch/pounds per manual (manual says 12 to 16). The bearings seem tight to me. I can turn the shaft by hand, however, with what I would consider moderate hand pressure. The shaft certainly won't spin freely. Is that normal? Should I be concerned?

I am assuming that you are refering to the pinion bearing. The bevel gear is usually referred to as the differential ring gear in Ford literature. @"ring and pinion gears". Caterpillar etc refers to the ring gear as the "bevel" gear and others do too. The pinion and the "bevel" are two different gears.

I think you can rest assured that the preload you have on the pinion is good to go. It is going to loosen up a bit in the first hours anyway after it is "run in".

I adjust the preload in what an old mechanic friend of mine called the "ignorant way". I just tighten the bearing until I feel resistance and that is it. Actually this is not so much ignorant as it is experiance.
