hey all, I just got a fergy TO30, runs well, bushhogged like crazy like 4 acres,, lots more to do ,, I dont know if I left the key on or what , but the battery is dead, I didnt even try to jump it yet,, was on my tn55 all day except I wanted to disc a little and figured I would use the fergy,, so I just used the 9n to disc, but I have the battery on charge, I took it out of the tractor because it was next to the barn too far for a charger,, anyway when I put the battery back in, will I have to polarize it like the 9n, it is 6 volt,, but has a regulator, not a cut out swittch,, any thoughts ?pat thansk

If your T)-30 has a regulator, the cut-out is built inside the regulator. It could be bad allowing the current to flow back to the generator when the tractor is off. You could take the over off and inspect it. The cut-out is usually the larger coil on the right side with points normally open. You can test continuity between BAT and GEN terminals with an ohm-meter. if you get a resistance reading, the cut-out is bad. It may be adjustable to adjust the cut-out to a small degree. Also check for corrosion, burnt points etc inside the VR.

Anytime you remove a battery, you chould repolarize the system to restore residual magnetism. Touch a jumper wire from BAT to ARM terminals of the VR for a millisecond with ignition key off, everything else hooked up.

Maybe I've been lucky all these years but I never knew to polarize after putting in a battery. Don't know if I've had a battery out a dozen times but I've surely had one out 6 times. Good to know, my battery is out right now.

Well, since polarizing takes so much specialized equipment, a "clean room" and tyvek suit and is so complicated, I guess it would be better to bypass that step. Especially if you haven't been messing with the generator.

I realize it's not necessary to polarize when you just replace a battery, but there is more going on here, it would appear, with the chraging system.

I’m with you, Rob. I have owned my 49 8N for over 26 years and have had the battery out many times and have never messed with the voltage regulator to “polarize” anything. Guess I’ve been lucky too. Rick

You do not need to polarize after battery replacement. Removing and replacing the battery does does not affect the residual magnitism of the field shoes. Happy Motoring

The way I understand it,polerizing would only be nessesary if the battery had been accidentally hooked up backwards.ie.6V.neg. ground.Claus,am I right on that?

As long as the cutout relay in the voltage regulator remains open, polarization is not necessary. Of course if you start the engine and the voltage comes up and the cutout closes, you will have bigger problems, trying to feed 6 volts negative into a 6 volt positive battery.
Happy Motoring
