8N Wheel bearing Problem

I'm having a problem with the front wheel bearing on my 8N. I have the owner and service manuals but I can not find the answer to my question. In the owners manual there are instructions and a picture on how to service the front wheel bearing. Here's my question: The front hub cover how is it removed? It looks like some type of 4 sided wrench is needed. I assume that it just pushs on, and does not screw on an off? but with the 4 sided nose it looks like it takes a special tool. The reason I am asking is because I can not seem to get the dust cover off. With a pair of channel locks I can turn the cover one way and the other, but I am unable to pull the cover off. So before I broke anything, I thought I would ask to make sure that it does not screw off, which I can't seem to do that either. Do I need any special tools or do I just need to bang on it a little harder. Thanks for any suggestions.

The bearing cover screws off in a counter-clockwise direction. Instead of channel-locks, try an open end wrench. You'll need a bearing puller to get the wheel bearing out.

Thanks,,,, I kind of thought so after tring to pry off for 30 minutes.

Thanks also for the advice on the bearing puller.

Just wished the service and owner manual would mention these things. But I guess they can't make them to simple minded....

Alan, Those dust caps are screwed in. Perhaps you could clean up the threads & give them a shot of P/B Blaster or WD-40. I used a 12" Cresent wrench turning them to the left (counter clockwise). HTH Jim
