Governor/Carburetor problem (I think)

Brief History: 1950 8N, 12 volt with electronic ignition, owned three years. Strong engine.

Symptoms: Tractor wouldn't start and run when it was suddenly needed so the wife bought me a new Zenith from the local dealer rather than wait for a rebuild kit for the M-S this last winter. Starts and runs great. Didn't pull well under load so I rebuilt the governor in February thinking that might be the cause. Again pulled and checked the governor last night to verify freedom of movement and measurements (pretty certain that it's all spot on), installed and took a short test drive with no improvement. Grading, mowing, hills (any significant loading) all result in the engine slowing with no noticeable effort on the part of the governor/carburetor to maintain the rpm.

Am I perhaps fighting a carburetion problem even as well as it starts and runs? Ideas on where else to look for improvement?

I'm not a mechanic by any means but my son and I are willing to jump in and try most anything. Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Thanks, Rick

I don't know if this will be much help but I have had some problems with the new Zenith carb I put on my 9N. Finally this weekend, I pulled the carb apart and found that the needle was sticking. After taking the float bowl off I was able to gently poke the float up and the needle would stay up against the seat. I blasted the seat with carb cleaner. I finally took some 600 Grit sand paper (not a recommended adjustment) and smoothed out the rubber stuff on the needle, so it didn't stick. It seems to work well. (But it certainly would be possible to goof it up beyond all repair) probably I will soon get the Non Zenith (NOS or ??) carb.

In most other carbs, cars, mowers etc. I have seen there is a little spring thingey that attaches the needle to the float that pulls the needle away. It seems that the Zenith relies on gravity and pressure only. IMHO, it's not the best design.

Rick..... ....there's been reports of the Zenith replacement carb having undersized mainjet. I don't know anymore. There might be some more info in the "archives". If'n you still have your original M/S carb, might be time to seriously rebuild it as all necessary parts are available..... ...Dell

Hmmm, I have never happy with my Zeith, and Dell's comment may explain a lot. Again no proof but it may help explain why I seem to need an overly rich setting on that carb.
