Hi ONTRICK,

FYI (for your information), I have story to tell about bush hog blades.

My first bush hog for my 8N was a used 4 footer that I purchased at the local Ford (back in 1977) tractor dealership for $150. It worked fine for a couple of years. When it seemed to quit cutting as smooth as it previously did, I discovered that the blades were worn out and beyond sharpening. I didn’t have a socket big enough to fit the big nut on the pin that held the blades on the stump jumper.

I decided to take it back to the tractor dealership and let them put new blades on it. (I was willing to pay the cost) When they called and said it was ready I went back to pick it up. I was excited about my new blades on my hog. I immediately connected it to the 8N and started hogging and noticed that it wasn’t doing such a good job. In fact, it was worse than it was with the worn out blades. Upon further investigation I noticed that the blades were turning in the opposite direction of the cutting edges of the blades; they were turning backwards. (It was apparently the wrong set of blades for that mower.)

I called the dealership and informed them about the problem. They offered to come and pick it up, fix the problem and bring it back for free. However, instead of installing the correct blades, they simply inverted the same set of blades. The problem with this was that since the blades were offset, the cutting edge was now facing the right direction of rotation but they were up side down. I called them back and they said they would come and get it the next day but they couldn’t grantee they could find the correct blades.

They finally found a set of blades sharpened on both sides that worked.

The moral of this story….. paying a high price to get competent, professional service does not always ensure competent, professional service. I decided to get a socket that was big enough to changes the blades out myself. Rick H. Ga.

You highlight the reason I prefer to do my own mech work. My fave rant is about having to fuss with Firestone Service Centers to put the proper air pressure in Firestone tires on my Fords! I swear...how hard can it be for these guys to read a data plate or look it up in an owner's manual? They wouldn't believe me when I wrote it on the work order! And that's just a small thing, tire air pressure. That when on for years and I finally gave up.

I'm not sure of interchange.. but who knows. If you have a farm store or something like a tractor supply co. in the area, swing by... our local store carries many blades.. perhaps you can find a match.
