hello gents, I need a little help or info regarding a used bush hog i've found 4 sale. It is a Bush hog model# 105. ser.#1110314. looks pretty old, but I thought someone here might be familiar with this model, the age of it, and how my 48 8N will handle it? By the way it is a 5'. I want to use it for mowing a 1 acre apple orchard [about 60 trees]. Also....is it possible to some how offset this unit so I can kinda reach under the trees to mow? thanks for any info you can help me with!

I've had my Bush Hog #205 for over 23 years and it was old when I bought it. It needed repair when I bought it but it has been a good unit considering I have used it almost to the point of abuse. An N in good shape will handle it just fine. As Dell and others point out, get and use an overrun coupler.

Randy..... ....In general, 8N's will handle 5' brushogs' just fine. And you'd be surprized at how clever you get at "waggin' the hog" you get to get under your trees. Of course, brushog's don't know the difference between tall grass and small trees, so ya gottta be a littlebitt carefull if its a young orchard. If'n its a mature orchard, and toward harvest time, the fruit ladden branches might wanna knock ya off yer seat. learn to duck? fast.

You will need an Over Running Coupler (ORC) on your PTO shaft. Its a 1-way device that prevents all that rotory inertia from backfeeding thru the PTO into the tranny and driving your tractor foward when you clutch to slow down to go around the apple tree, the corner of the barn, fence post, irrigation canal, creekbank, wifes car (don't ask). $60 US cheap. Also comes in 2-sizes to match your 1-1/8 PTO to modern 1-3/8 Brushog PTO, or 1-3/8 PTO to 1-3/8 brushog PTO..... ....HTH, Dell

His question brings up a question from me. Anyone here use a rotary cutter in a 1pth tow configuration? ( off a clevis or similar setup on the 11 hole drawbar ).. I see many cutters that are setup to be configured this way, or as the common 3pt setup.. If so, could this be pulled slightly offset to one side of the drawbar? In other words, what angle of offset is ok with the pto shaft? ( considering that in a 1pt tow situation, even if pulled from the middle, there will be some pivot between the tractor and the 'hog during a turn... or are there stabilizers ( chains ) that are used to keep the towed 'hog straight in line with the tractor.
Guess someone with an old JD or farmall with no 3pt might have more experience with this one...

thanks

Sounder..... ...the reason brushogs work as well as the do, has to do with the 3-point suspension system....ie....trailing wheel and tractors 2-BIG rear tires. Otherwize, you'd be scalping what yer mowin'. If you want to "offset" mow, use a 4-wheel "finish mower" or a sicle-bar haymower..... .Dell

I actually don't want to do any offset mowing.. the question was more or less academic. I was just wondering if anyone did mow using a rotary mower setup in tow configuration, and if so, what driveline problems they encountered.

I realize most of us here have N's and the nice 3pt hitch.. so i am guessing only those with some of the other vintage non 3pt machines ( old jd's / farmalls ) might have experienced this.

Thanks
