A couple of years ago I attempted to change the hydraulic relief valve in my 51 N. Removed the old one with no problem, however, the new one would not go in. Replaced the old one easily retried the new one and never could get it to fit, finally returned it. Any comments?

Also, can these be changed w/o dumping the tranny oil?

Hi Mark,

I知 not 100% sure that removing the PTO shaft is absolutely necessary to change out the pump relief valve. I have heard that removing the PTO shaft allows a lot more room to turn the wrench since the relief valve is underneath the PTO shaft. I removed my PTO shaft when I replaced my relief valve.

I知 sure Zane would have a more definitive answer to this. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

I pulled the PTO shaft when I attempted to replace the valve (was replacing oil, thought while in there, might as well change the relief valve). Removing the shaft definitely helped, not sure I could have turned the wrench without doing so.

I think that your replacement relief valve had the same problem that a lot of these Johnny Come Lately after market parts have. They look like they should fit but they don't! Mis-machined parts look good but when you try to install them then is when the flaws become all too apparent.

The parts that are made in India and China and other places as well are a poor substitute for the real thing. The real thing in some cases with the N tractors in no longer available and if it were we couldn't afford to buy it.

If you have a good nut collection, try finding one that fits the old pressure relief valve and then test fit it to the new one. You are trying to get your lift to stay up a little longer I expect. These pressure relief valves are not viagra you know?

I replaced my relief valve in my 9N last year. I purchased the new one from my local Ford New Holland dealer. I had the same experience as you - new one refused to thread in. I tried the old, it went right in. Tried the new one - no matter what it would not thread. I took it back and got a replacement, had them check the thread before I left with it. This one went in with no problem. It was the same valve, but some minor defect in the thread with the first one.

Hi Henry,

The new one should have fit if it was the correct relief valve. It is possible the first few threads on the new one were a little rough or maybe you were not holding your mouth just right.:-). You can replace the valve with the oil in it but you may not be able to see what you are doing. I think the oil covers the valve when full of oil and normal operation.

You might try parking the tractor on an incline with the front facing down hill, remove the PTO shaft and the right hand cover plate (dip stick) and you might be able to get to it. It takes an 11/16-box end wrench. HTH Rick H. Ga.

the valve can be changed without dumping the oil, but it is going to be very messy, and you will not be albe to see anything because the valve is under the oil.
