I was just out cutting the pasture when the PTO fell off. It just slides over a splined shaft coming out of the back of the tractor. But now it will not stay on. I can't figure out what holds it. It always wobbled a little, but my neighbor also has a 2N and his does the same thing. Do I have to replace the entire thing? Help

You only need a new pin

All you need is a bolt or a pin to replace the one the fell out. I use a bolt. Slide the adaptor back on so the hole in the shaft lines up with the holes in the adaptor. Drop in a new bolt and add a nut. Problem solved.

Patrick,
That splined shaft at the back of your tractor IS the PTO. It sounds like you either have an ORC (had a large, round head) or an adapter that changes the size from the original, outdated 1-1/8 to the newer 1-3/8 standard.

If it is an ORC then just replace it. If it is an adapter, you can either replace it with an ORC or replace the PTO shaft with the more modern 1-3/8 size (either way you gotta have an ORC on there to prevent accidents).

They will normally have a split pin that holds them on-it goes through the hole and mates with the detent in the PTO shaft.

Did you PTO come off or did your ORC (over-running clutch) come off? The ORC's slide over the original PTO and are held on by, I believe, driving a small pin through the ORC into the PTO.

The ORC is held on by a split pin located under the grease fittings

I don't think I have an ORC, as my 2N lurches forward with the brush hog attached if I let the clutch out before the brush hog has stopped spinning. It must be an adapter then, because the splined shaft it slides over looks like the splined shaft on the end of what fell off. And there was a grease fitting on it too. It sounds like an ORC might be a worthwhile addition. I need to finish mowing in the am so I can leave for the lake. I have a Ford dealer an hour away, but a JD dealer is just down the road. Can I get what I need there? About how much should it set me back?

Ya really should have an over-run coupler when using a brush hog with a 9N/2N. Ya caint stop the tractor when the thing is spinning even if ya push in the clutch and stand on the brake. Those spinning blades have alot of energy and can push/backfeed the tranny through the PTO. That is what an ORC is for. Saves yer butt and yer tractor from being pushed into trafic, a tree, or whatever.

Measure your pto shaft. Most ORCs come 1 3/8 by 1 3/8. If you have the original 1 1/8 shaft, you will be disapointed if they give you a 1 3/8 ORC. They have ORCs that have the PTO end for a 1 1/8
shaft.

Tommy:

Is it any more complicated to install than just getting the pin for the existing one? (Which I assume I could also probably get at the JD dealer.) I'm on a deadline - if I don't get my wife to the lake to see her folks by dinner I'm in trouble. ;)
