Thanks.

And if anyone has any supernatural influence / information concerning poultry, direct it my way.

Our first batch of turkeys ( royal palm ) are hatching now, and the wife and I are learning as we go.

Our hens have been having a poor time of setting on their eggs, and when they finally did hatch a few, they killed or neglected them in a few days.. so we incubated the rest of the eggs.

Right now we are hand feeding them.. but I'm trying real hard to think like a mother turkey and teach these pullits to eat the starter scratch. I'm having slow luck.. but none of them have died yet.. and they've been hatched since last thursday.. so I'm doing something right. ( We have experience hand raising other domestic birds.. finches, parakeets, etc...( lots of finches... ) anyway...all info, help , and 'good thoughts' will be appreciated...

Safe holiday to all.

We were large turkey growers in the 50's & 60's, very successful at it too. Turkeys are not very intelligent as the setting hen has demonstrated, incubator is the way to go. Now did you know that you need to teach the poults to eat and drink? We did even with flocks as large as 10,000, First dip the birds beak into the waterer then the feeder a repitition of this won't hurt. Place brightly colored marbles in the feed and water. Turkeys by nature peck at bright things and will figure out where the food and water is when picking at the marbles. Turkeys are very susceptible to diseases that other birds only tend to carry, isolation from other birds is a big factor in turkey growing. The thing about turkeys holding their heads up and drowning in the rain is nothing but a myth, they are not quite that stupid. Good luck and have a good day!

Thanks for the info. Makes me feel better now, since that is what I was doing.. but couldn't remember if that was the correct procedure. They drink fine, and if you walk away, they eat the scratch fine.. but if you are around, they beg for the dropper of hand feed formula. Funny enough.. we didn't use marbles.. but found out about the pecking at bright objects by accident. When I was first handling them, they always pecked at my ring.. so I left it in the waterer.. worked great.

thanks again.

Interesting, turkeys! We have owned this property since 1980 and I've known about it since I was a kid. Never any reports of any turkeys around. Last year we saw a few hens and one gobbler start showing up at different times. Yesterday one of the hens showed up in the pasture with nine, 9, new hatchlings. We had a hard rain last night so I am wondering if they all survived the storm.
Best of luck with yours. We raised some when I was a kid but I don't remember anything special about them. Maybe Gaspump will weigh in on this.

We finally gave up on letting our hens raise their own, after the hens killed or neglected about 4 clutches.. with very low hatch rate. Went ahead and got the incubator and rotater setup.. not too bad of price.

So far i've got 5 live chicks out of it.

thanks guys
