'49 8N Distributor Question

Is it possible to have the distributor(front mount)out of time by 180 Degrees? I know the distributor tangs are uneven, so that the distributor can only be installed one way. I am having a problem with my 8N losing power, and not running smooth at high RPM. I also can hear what sounds like "blowback" through the carb. I also notice that #1 and #4 plugs foul fairly quick, whereas #2 and #3 are clean. This engine has been rebuilt, and it is practically brand new. I have re-adjusted the points, the valves, and the carb numerous times, but I just ain't getting it right. I am wondering if I maybe I have the distributor firing the wrong cylinders at the wrong time, even though it runs perfect at slow idle. (I'm fairly new at this, so please bear with me. I'd appreciate any help or advice you can give) Thx

While it is possible, it is not likely. After you check the firing order, it would not hurt to double check and make sure the distributor is on correctly. While you have the distributor off, check the condition of the shaft bushings-there should be almost no slop. I'd also double check the timing and make sure that the points open equally on all 4 lobes of the shaft.

Polecat..... .....check your frontmount distributor firing order, should be 1,2,4,3 CCW. that means:
nipple 1 goes to sparkie #1
nipple 2 goes to sparkie #2
NO problem right? here it gets tricky
nipple 3 (labled 4) goes to sparkie #4
nipple 4 (labled 3) goes to sparkie #3
isn't that amazing? 1,2,4,3 CCW
Ol N-Engine is so good that'll run on just 2 cylinders..... ..... respectfully, Dell
