I'm restoring my 8N and am trying to decide whether to have my original Marvel-Schebler carb overhauled or whether I should buy a new replacement carb. Cost concerns aside, which way should I go? Also, I noticed that there is now available a new cast iron (USA made) replacement carb. Any thoughts on those? Thanks much in advance.

If I were you, I'd buy a new replacement carb. Don't listen to those other guys. Those old original carbs are tough to deal with and rebuild.

Oh yeah, please send me your old original carb when you buy the new replacement from Taiwan. I wouldn't want anyone to try and use that old original carb and have problems also. I'll just hold on to it, just to be safe.

JUST KIDDING, by all means keep the old carb and rebuild. I paid 30 bucks for a complete rebuild kit, and I didn't really need the entire kit. However, I'm am serious about sending me the old original if you do decide to buy a new one. I've been looking for an original core for a long time.

If you rebuild the carb do one thing not in the instructions. Take a piece of 100 grit or so sandpaper suitable for sanding on metal, it doesn't have to be wet/dry paper but it might be, and place it on a flat surface. I have wet/dry paper and I would put some cutting oil on it too. Take the bowl half of the carb and place the gasket surface down on the sandpaper. Use a figure-8 movement until you sand it down 'shiny' and flat taking off all the high spots. That will take out any warp and make for a like-new gasket seal. Do the same for the top-half of the carb. "Refacing the gasket surface" is what it's called and those old carbs need it. When you put it back together don't overtighten the four bolts holding the halves together or you just warp it again. Remember there is no pressure in there so snug is good.

Rick,
Unless your current carb is missing or damaged beyond repair I would simply rebuild your exsisting carb. The kits are inexpensive and it is simple to do.

I always try to keep the original parts as long as possible. Therefore, I think that I would overhaul the carb. The overhaul kits are not that expensive. Take care in removing the jets, though. Perhaps a thorough cleaning is all that will be required.

Hope this helps. :})
