I have read differing opinions regarding whether the inner and outer axle seal lips face in or out. I'm about to install new ones. Is there a consensus?

As a general rule if the seal has a tension spring around the inside of a lip the spring goes toward the grease. Some times you will see a double liped seal that has the spring on both sides ( mostly marine use) they keep oil in and water or dirt out.

Rick - the general rule for lip seals is the lip faces the direction in which you wish to do the sealing. Sometimes you find a seal has as lip on both sides, but one is larger than the other. In that case the larger lip faces direction of major concern. That type of seal may be used to keep oil from leaking out and dirt from gettin in.
