Ring Gear Assembly

I just finished reassembling the ring gear assembly on my '52 8N. I installed new side- gears. I purchased new side-gear thrust washers but decided to use the old ones because they were actually a bit thicker than the new ones and had no apparent wear (heavier as well). After bolting the two assembly halves together, I tried to turn the gears using my finger - they would not turn. To turn them, I had a friend hold the assembly while I inserted the axle - using it to turn the gears. I had to use moderate force to get them to turn. Is this normal when new side-gears are installed or do I have a problem? Thanks for the help.

I was looking for Zane to reply to this. Maybe he will. I have not been inside the rear end on a N yet. have worked on my share of auto and truck rears. The spider gear should turn free. I would not think you would have to install a axle and use force. I would have to try the thin washers.
Sounds like you are going to ruin the carrier if you run it tight.
