My 9N is better than all the 8N's around here but that is because of it's condition. If there was an 8N in the same condition with a side mount distributor that would be nice. BC Mike C

I have owned both and used them to do all varieties of work and I can honestly say there is very little difference. The extra gear on the 8N does come is handy and the side mount distributor is nice but day in and day out it just doesn't matter. The biggest difference I found was that the steering mechanism on the 8N is much better. Buying a tractor that runs well and is in good shape is much more important.

As an addition, if you want some side by side comparisons.. drop by a farm store, and look for a I&T F0-4 manual.. it covers the 9/2/8n... look at the diagrams.. will give you some ideas of the differences.. plus.. if you get one of these tractors.. you will want to buy one of those manuals anyway.

Also, you can check the archives here on this forum.. there are untold troves of info here.

Pay special attention to posts by some of the long time members like Zane, Dell, Claus, etc..

Good luck

There are only minor differences in the N series.

Most notable , the 9/2n don't have position control on the 3pt lift.. only draft... the 8n has both. A fellow named Zane makes some kind of device which allows the draft control on the 9/2n to work like position control.. is good price too.

There are some wheel hub / brake differences.. notable, the 8n has brake pedals on the right side ( good ) and the 9/2 n has one pedal on each side ( harder to use )... 9/2 has no factory running boards.. just foot pegs.. but many have already added hang over foot rails, and if not they are available, or easy to fabricate.
9/2n 3spd tranny.. 8n 4 spt tranny..

Other differences are very minor..

Rod..... ....what soundguy sez..... .and..... ..
they're 50 yo tractors, some been rode hard and put away wet. Condition is more important than model. N's are NOT the tool for EVERY job, but they're down right handy for alotta small acreage jobs..... ...Dell

8N would be the correct answer in most cases .
