I have a 1946 2N. I am in the process of restoring it. I have a couple of questions. It had a starter button on the dash and a foot starter button on the lower area? Do I need both and when I tried to get a replacement the parts guy said that the button on the dash was not in the book!??? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks Rick

Rick,
If it currently works, don't fix it unless you want to do some rewiring. As mentioned, the transmission mounted button is the one and only. The dash mounted one I'm sure bypasses the neutral cut-off.
Realize that the 8N and 2N starter buttons performed slightly different. You could short at the button on the 8N to check it. You can't do that on a 2N, as someone else mentioned it's only mechanical. The real starter mechanism is located below the battery. You can short here to start the tractor. God only knows what the previous owner did to the wiring. The original button may or may not be bad. If it is it is a real easy repair.
I just rewired totally my 8N, as my wiring was jury rigged and also had a bypassed starter button. If you want to spend some money and have some fun, go ahead. It's not that hard.

The '39 N's came with a dash mounted starter button. It was moved the trans cover sometime in
1940 as a safety feature.

The n-c o m p l e t e catalog lists the dash mount
starter switch for use with 9n's to s/n 12499.

Rick, as far as I know all the starter buttons on an N were on the tranny top. All of the dash mounted ones that I have seen are aftermarket add ons. most of the time the owner just didn't want to pop the top off of the tranny, and since the starter button is only a grounding device it was easier to re-route them to the dash. On the 2N's and 9N's the starter button actually is a mechanical device that pushes a rod that activates the real starter button behind the dash/under the battery box. Only the 8N's were grounding devices. Since his is a 2N then his should be the mechanical type.

The starter button next to the gear shift was the ONLY starter button on the original N's. If there is a starter button on the dash then someone jury rigged it because the original rusted up.

Your FO-4 manual shows how the button next to the gearshift activates the actual starter button behind the dash hidden under the battery tray.

The original system has an interlock so the tractor cannot be started in gear. I highly recommend fixing the system so the interlock is functioning.

I also have the remnants of a button on my dash, but there wasn’t anything hooked to it when I got the tractor.

The original configuration on non-wartime 2n's was a push-button on the top of the transmission just in front of the gear shifter (incorporated into neutral lock out for safety), and a key switch on the left hand side of the steering column. If you had a starter button rigged up on the dash, then it would be incorrect as well as bypassing the neutral lockout and therefore unsafe. I'd put it back original to save headaches later on in electrical tracing.

Hope this helps

Jeb
