had a person stop by yesterday, while i was doing a little ploweing with 8n.he rebuilt motor and replaced clutch and rear hubs and although he had good spark, gas and all,it wouldnt start.told him i had to pull mine to get her to start up after rebuild.he just lives down the road a bit, bout 20 miles so i went down and after checking everything out we decided to pull her to get her started.what happened is this. i put the tractor in 2nd gear and the tires would just slide.now myself being new to rebuilt tractors have no idea as to why the tires dont turn.is the tranny locked up? could the hubs be to tight? the tires turn when the rear of the tractor is off the ground.since he has no computer i told him i would aske you guys for help.i have no idea as why he has this problem.any info would be appreciated. thanks again to all who helped me with my 48ford 8n.she is running beautiful and looking brand new. sorry for the long post. roger

I rebuilt mine then had a friend pull my 2N with it in 3rd gear. Started right up and then let her run for a bit. 2nd gear just slid along :-)

THIS IS COMMON ON MY TRACTOR, IT WILL DO IT SOMETIMES, BUT i PUT IT IN 4TH GEAR, EVEN THE OLD jOHN DEERE DOES THIS. tHERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR TRANSMISSION, OR AT LEAST IT WOULD BE UNLIKELY.

Had an ol pick up do that once a long time ago. 45 mile/per hour tow, pop the clutch, and the wheels wouldn't turn. Turns out most of the piston rods were put in backward. Turned em around and it was good to go.

Two things. When you are towing any machine to start it use the highest gear (3rd or 4th) Not the lowest. Because the drive is reversed, the Ratio is reversed and first becomes your highest gear and third becomes your lowest. Whenever you dissaemble an engine, Pay attention and WRITE down which way things are assembled. The Rods are numbered by both cylinders and rod caps. Usually the rod caps must have their numbers together. They are NOT reversable as you see. There can be a tiny misalignment of a few thousanths and this will cause the bearings to bind on the crank journals.
Pistons usually have a mark for that side of the piston that goes to the front of the engine. make sure you get that correct. Then make sure you match the rod cap to the rods properly. It's not rocket science, It's just good careful mechanics. Regards, Rich
