I have an old GI issue heavy duty screw driver that I made into a valve guide removal tool over 40 years ago and still use it when removing valves from an N engine.

About a quarter inch back from the end of a big old tough screw driver grind off about 3/16" from the side of the shank so that you have a sort of off set in the end of the screw drive head.

Remove the manifold and insert the home made tool into the open valve port and using the top of the port to heel agaist push the valve guide down with the end of the screwdriver offset until it is far enough to remove the horseshoe keeper. Then you can use the same big old screw driver to drive the whole valve and spring assembly along with the keepers etc out the top of the block.

Makes it a lot easier than trying to remover the valve stem keepers while the valve is in the engine. You can then reassemble the valve and guide and spring etc completely and insert the whole thing into the bore of the guide and use the home made tool to press the assembly down enough to put the horseshoe guide keeper in place. Usually the spring tension will push the guide up enough to trap the keeper.

The split guides have to move down 1/16" or so before the keepers can be pulled out. I suspect the solids are the same. I lifted the spring, removed the keepers from the end of the valve, lifted the valve up and used a bent screwdriver as a drift between the valve and seat to drive the guide down some. Then you have to 'convince' the guide to move the other direction up and out.

What do you mean old type valves. Does It have split guides? if solid guides I use a automotive C type spring compressior and compress the spring and remove the valve keepers then the valve and spring, push the guide down and remove the clip that holds the guide in place . You then can drive the guide out or wait till you have the cam out and drive them out then. If no spring compressior you may make do now with a couple screw drivers and compress the spring enoufh to get the keepers out.
