I had a pond completely encirlced with cat tails out 20' or more. Couldn't get to the water at all. Nice pond, sping fed, never dry. That's a tank to you Texans.
Fixed the N up with a pump that hangs on the pto shaft and got a 65 gal tank with a wand. I was able to spray 25' or so. Ag agent says Round Up will kill cat tails if you hit em just before they head out. Ask him when they head out. He says dunno. I ask him how will I know. He says dunno, spray em end of April first of May. So I did. Stunted em and they didn't head out but they didn't die.
Next year I sprayed em end of May first of June. Very effective. Killed em, mostly. Wasn't able to get to the cat tails out nearest the middle because of previous and current growth. Sooooo...
Burnt off all the old and now dead growth. That was exciting, cat tails really burn! Big time.
Still didn't get enough old, dead growth to get to the cat tails 20' from shore. Last winter I went out on the ice and chain sawed the entire mess. What a chore, only fell through the ice once or twice. Couldn't get em all but close. Several people commented on the cat tail removal. Pond looks pretty good but still cat tails.
Just came in and the N worked good except I just about backed her into the pond counting on those brakes too much. No more backing down an incline to the pond for me thank you. Parallel to the shore only, duuuhhh.
Great news is I was able to reach and spray probably 98%, I hope 100%, of what is left in that pond, the are gonna DIE! Might have to hit em again one day but the battle is won. What a job that has been but I have reclaimed that fine little pond. That pump and tank have been great spraying around the place. Some day I'll build a boom for it. I carry it in my 8x4 trailer now.

i understand that there is also an aquatic form of round-up. its not more potent, but lacks the surfactants the reglar form has so it is more likely to stay on the plant and less likely to get into your pond water. Also, i heard a theory that fall might be a better time to spray because the plant is putting less of its energy out, and more likely to take the round up in as it prepares for winter. cat tails-- i hate 'em.

Yeah, is it Remedy that is the aquatic mix? Something like that. That's what the Ag agent recommended but with a wink and a nod. Anyway Coop doesn't stock the aquatic mix because it cost way more and the chemical salesman advises them to just use Round Up on water, it's the same thing, and limit coverage to 25%-50% of the surface area of the water to minimize oxygen depletion. The explanation is in the big chemical book Coop has. The Ag agent knew that but he has to recommend by the book and Round Up is not listed as the proper choice for application on water.
