12 volt coil with resistor tag question # 2

As stated yesterday I have a 12 volt coil with a tag that says use with resistor. It is an NAA with a 12 volt conversion installed by the previous owner. I have about 14.9 volts coming out of the alternator, 12 volts at the coil, and about 3 volts dropping at the resistor. The resistor measured at .9 ohms on my cheezy digital multimeter. If I get another resistor and put it in series with the first one to get a drop of 6 volts and have 9 volts at the coil will this be good enough to keep from toasting the coil or should I get a real 12 volt coil from an automobile?
I saw a previous post about using a late 60's early 70's Volkswagen Beetle coil, is this a good choice or does anyone else have another car model that I could use to ask for a coil at the auto parts store?

PDB,
The Echlin/Napa Parts book for auto’s 1958-1977 provides the following Coil & Ballast Resistor Combo’s

Chev: Coil IC12/IC13 ---matched to Ballast ICR13

Ford: Coil IC 10---atched to Ballast ICR22

Dodge: Coil IC 17 --- Matched to ICR23 (this is a dual switched)

Volkswagen 1963-1974 (12volts systems): Coil IC 66 (no ballast listed, but may have resistive wire in the harness) Ohms of coil should be ~ 3.5 to stand alone

Hope this Helps

I was involved in thread about the VW coil but that is not the only coil avalable but a darn good one. One thing that I did not mention before about the use of this coil. A wider plug gap will increase the value of this coil. Hotter-longer sparkies as 8 way Dell would say. About .005 increase is good to start with. Increasing the point gap will also increase the duration of fire from the coil. About .002 will be a good start if your distributor cam is not too warn to accomplish this.

PDB..... ....what Hobo sez..... ...or.....
leave it bee. or use a 12 to 6 volt resistor (which is usually about 1.5 ohms)

Personally, I like to use ALL my electricity to run stuff rather than wasteing it as useless heat in any kind of resistor voltage reduction scheme. Hot-rod coils also have hotter sparkies. Your call..... .....Dell
