I have everything back together, adjusted both springs per FO-4 instructions.Trying to adjust the quadrant but the rocker lever only goes about half way to the pump housing and I'm at the end of the adjustment.I've rechecked everything per FO-4, but can't find the problem.I know Zane sells a jig for this, but I really don't have the cash.Any ideas?

Probably have a bent control valve rod. This ain't the way it is supposed to be done but if you have done all else you can bend the rod forward about half way down. Bend it so it points forward more. I never recommend doing this when using my jig but in your case it may be the best way to go.

Did you replace the cam follower pin?????

HaZANE,No I didn't replace the cam follower pin,it's ok,but the cam is VERY worn. Also the control valve rod is already bent a little forward. Is it true FO-4's instrutions are don't work on a worn system? Thanks for the help.

The way I see it if the linkages are all worn and apparently your's are or the cam would not be worn that bad then those measurements of spring length and rod length just can't make it come out right. What you need is a point to be able to adjust to and that is what a jig does.

Even back when these tractors were fairly new the only way to adjust the lift on the 8N was with the use of the Ford special jig tool set up. It was an aluminum casting and fairly delicate and I have not seen one in years. I imagine that most of them were broken and the rest have been lost over time. I designed mine by using the method of trial and error until I had the 8N lift adjusted so that the draft and the position mode were just right and then built the prototype jig to fit that lift. Then I built a jig to build the jigs in so that each one is the same as the original prototype that I made. It just gives a point to shoot for so that when it is acheived you can be pretty sure that the lift is going to work the first time you put it back on the tractor.

The FO4 manual works good if everything is new. All of the the wear over the years makes the manual almost usless for the adjustments. I tried that twice before buying Zane's jig. Then it took me 4 times to get the instructions right. I'm slow sometimes. You really need to get that jig if you can.
Another part of the equation once you get that done is the externals. Loose lift arm swivals, loose top links, a worn or loose top link rocker etc. all affect the operation of the 3 point.
I made some special oversized pins and some bushings to reduce the affect of wear out in the diff. casting for the top link rocker.

Don't know if this will help, but in draft control the rocker lever only moves in the top third of the quadrant,in position control, the rocker contacts the pump housing at half way up the quadrant.I've never messed with this stuff so I'm in the dark other than whats in FO-4.
