Small oil leak

Hello,

I recently pressure washed my tractor (3500 PSI was awesome), however I now have a small oil leak. I'm not really sure if it's engine oil or tranny oil but it looks like engine oil. The leak is about an inch to the front of my tranny oil plug on the bottom belly of the tractor (52 8n). It looks like there is a small metal rod inserted into the block and folded over. Maybe the leak has been there and someone repaired it, but I removed all the junk that was keeping it plugged.

Anyway, my question is can I use JB Weld to seal this small leak? Will it hold a small oil leak, can it handle the temperature? Anyone suggest any other fix? Thanks.

This is rather normal for 50 year old ns if I understand correctly where your leak is, " If it aint broke dont fix it" .

Darn, that was quick. Talk about responses..... .. Glad I asked before I did anything. Kinda feel like a moron for thinking I had a problem when actually my tractor is performing the way it should.

Thanks for the FAST responses. Best 8n site going..... ...

Like the others said leave the hole open. But do find out if the fluid is engine oil or hydraulic fluid. You can probably go a long time if it's engine oil, but if it's the trans seal, you would be wise to block down the clutch pedal until you can fix it right. Hydraulic fluid leaking from the trans seal is more likely to cause clutch problem it seems.

Do not plug that hole. It is there to drain any engine oil or tranny lube that gets by the seals. That metal rod is a cotter pin that is suposed to be loose to keep the hole clean and allow the oil to leak out and not build up in the clutch area. If it is only dripping a small amount of oil don't worry about it. Just put a pan under it if it is getting on you're floor.

Your leak is most likely tranny and / or engine oil. The area where the leak is coming from is the housing between the transmission and engine. Both the tranny input seal and engine rear main seal live in that space. The hole is there to do just what it is doing, that is draining seepage from those seals. If you plug the hole the oil will only build up causing more problems (like an oil soaked clutch plate). The folded over rod is actually a cotter pin. I have heard they were used to prevent bug type critters from nesting in there. Unless you have a major leak or really want to split your tractor I would suggest leaving well enough alone until you tear things apart in the future. HTH.

I'm assuming that you mean the weep hole with the cotter pin sticking out of it. Whatever you do, DON'T seal it up. The hole is there so if the rear main seal or input shaft seal leak the fluid will have someplace to go rather than fill up the housing.

The transmission fluid will have a different smell than the engine oil-that is the best way to figure out which is leaking. The input shaft is a simple fix once you split the tractor.

I don't know what the cotter pin holds on the inside but we all have this hole and metal clip. THis is the space between the transmission and engine where the clutch resides. The main engine seals pretty much always drip a drop or too and I do not think it's very unusual or troublesome. You undoubtedly unclogged this hole with the pressure and it is supposed to be open. I'll check the MPC if you are really interested.

I use JB weld also but have found something really extraordinary. Whether it's the household or automotive type, try GOOP. It's stronger than glue, flexible, waterproof and incredibly tough stuff. The problem for you is getting the oil off of the surface long enough to get the Goop on. Good luck.
