'New' 9N

I just found a 9N that I will be putting on a trailer and bringing home tomorrow. I have a lot to learn! I'm getting a good starter lesson from the guy I'm buying it from. I'm hoping this forum will provide some assistance.

Where can I find general information on safe operation of this type of tractor? I've taken care of a couple of guys who have rolled them backwards . . .

There's a small pushbutton switch on the dash, to the left of the ignition key. I plan to trace the wiring when I get it home . . . what is its function?

I'm planning on adding lights. It's been converted to 12V, so probably some halogen driving lights. Are original light switches available reasonably and where on the dash did they go?

Thanks!

John T

Hy Tyman,

It's interesting that you thought of that, as I had been wondering if there wasn't an after-market roll bar assembly for these. Wonder what those run?

I think I may have to sit on that idea for a while though. With gently rolling pasture land, I'll probably be pretty safe.

You'll be ok with "gently rolling pasture". Be safe and watch those ground hog holes. :-)

But if you want more info on a ROPS, click on the link below. You'd also haffta get use to wearing a seat belt on that 9N as well.

I don't think enough is being said about the dangers of bypassing the starter safety switch. Most of us are standing in front of the rear wheel when starting our "N" and a fast starting tractor in which the safety switch has been bypassed and that has been mistakenly left in gear is a death trap. I strongly suggest that anyone who has a tractor where the starter safety switch has been bypassed, to get them restored asap. My opinion...Ron

John,

That pushbutton may be to start the alternator charging. Just a momentary contact is all it takes. This avoids having to rev up the engine to start the charge. Especially likely if it is not a one wire alternator and doesn't have an idiot light.

I doubt it is a starter switch. If it is, though, it is easy to convert it back to original for safety reasons.

Hi George,

I got the tractor and traced the wires. One goes down to the positive battery cable terminal (this is 12-V and neg. ground) on the starter solenoid. The other, at first glance, looked as if it it went to the alternator. Turns out the wire was just laying loose down by the alternator.

It looks as if it is set up to power headlights that aren't installed??? Put an ammeter to the wires and got nothing. It seems to be a push on/push off switch that is bad.

Would this be headlights?

That tractor is not going to roll over backwards on you if you use common sense . Dont hook up anything to high on the 3 point hitch.

You might considder restoring the original starter button setup, if possible.. starter interlocking is a nice safety feature.

Hi Soundguy,

It appears to be the factory set-up. Trani must be in neutral to start and key switch on . . . ?

Cool. So many people 'work around' the original starter cutout instead of doing a little repair work.

These old tractors don't have many modern safety features, so we might as well use all it came with.

good luck,

Soundguy

Run over to the local Ford/New Holland dealer and get the $5 manual on the N tractor. It has a safety section. He might have the FO-4 Ford tractor shop manual too. For starters.
Push button is a 12v conversion thing most likely.
