Amp Gauge after 12V Conversion

After converting my 9N to 12V, I can't get any reading on the amp gauge. I have the gauge wired in series with the wiring from the ignition switch to the resistor. Even when I reverse the wires I still get no reading. The alternator is putting out 14.8 volts at full throttle.

Any ideas. I did try to put a DMM in place of the amp meter and got a weird reading.

As a quick check of the ampmeter, rig a wire from the battery to a load.. like a light, run that thru the amp meter and complete the circuit.. you should show a draw.. if not.. may be bad ampmeter...

Ron..... ...well, first thing, your ignition coil only gonna draw (read) about 3 amps. Thats pretty small a needle deflection on an ammeter designed for 30 amps FS. 2nd thing, your ignition coil electricity is "pulsed" (the points ya know) and digital MM don't like pulsed voltages because they can't figger out which pulse leading/trailing edge to read. (its a technical thing) but amaizingly enuff, the ol'analog ammeter can't respond (wiggle) fast enuff to all the pulses so you kinda see what all the pulses average out to be.

3rd, you traditionally want to read the BATTERY charge line (heavy yellow wire) This is usually connected between the BIG battery starter switch lug and the ignition switch. The ignition switch to coil wire is usually RED and has the resistors in it somewhere. That is NOT where you want your ammeter to be connected..... ..... respectfully, Dell

I don't think that you have the ammeter wired correctly. I don't have a diagram at hand, however, there are some in the archives. Wish that I could be more help. :})
