If the distributor was removed from your engine during overhaul, as I assume it was, there is a good chance that it could have been reinserted 180 degrees off which would permit cylinders #2 and #3 to fire but not #1 and #4. This would permit the engine to idle but it makes an awful racket if you try to drive it or rev it up. Ask me how I know. Also the distributor could have been reinserted one or more cogs off optimum firing pattern. Before bolting down the distributor, move it left or right for that perfect sound of running if you don't have a timing light. On the wires, #1 goes to cylinder #1, #2 goes to cylinder #2, #3 wire goes to cyliinder #4 and wire #4 goes to cylinder #3 counter clock-wise. As simple as the tractors are, there is a fine line on timing for best operation. JMHO. Good N-ing.

Ralph..... ....what bg sez..... ..and..... ..
Sounds like the classic miss-installed sparkie wires. The N-Engine is sooo good it'll run on 2 cylinders at idle but won't take a throttle request for more power without complaining by backfiring...etc...

Check your frontmount firing order 1,2,4,3, CCW, ok?
nipple 1 goes to sparkie 1 (closest to radiator)
nipple 2 goes to sparkie 2, OK so far?
here's where it getts tricky.....
nipple 3 (labled 4) goes to sparkie 4
nipple 4 (labled 3) goes to sparkie 3
firing order 1,2,4,3, CCW, isn't that amazing?

HTH..... ....Dell

Don't let him tell ya otherwise, Dell can read your mind. More then that, I'm convinced he can see your tractor in tea leaves, chicken guts or something. He might know it's broke before you do!

Dell, I hate to dispute your answer but you are wrong. On the front mount distributor cap, the wiring nipples are labeled counterclockwise 1243.Plug wires should be inserted 1to1,2to2,3to3 and 4to4.This gives a firing order of 1243. 1 3 2 4 don

Don..... ...we're saying the same thing. Generally labeling goes linerally, 1 to 2 to 3 to 4. You're cap crossing and jumping by saying 1 to 2 to 4 to 3. I've yet to see a distributor rotor do a "figure 8" to crossover so that nipple #4 is next in rotation..... ...Dell

nipple 1 goes to sparkie 1 (closest to radiator)
nipple 2 goes to sparkie 2, OK so far?
NOW HERE IS WHERE IT GETS "TRICKY", PAY ATTENTION..... .
nipple 3 (LABLED 4) goes to sparkie 4
nipple 4 (LABLED 3) goes to sparkie 3
firing order 1,2,4,3, CCW, isn't that amazing?

The ignition variables: spark plugs, plug wires, rotor and cap, points, condensor, coil, wiring connections and centrifugal advance and timing and battery. Start at plug end and work your way back through the distributor. Correct plugs, correctly gapped? Copper wires, not carbon filamane suppression wires? All connections clean and tight? No cracks or corrosion in distributor cap? No corrosion or wear on rotor tip? Timing correct? Centrifugal advance not worn? Replace condensor and points, they're cheap. Correct air gap on points? When you get all of the other stuff checked and there is still no improvement, then you try another coil.
