Hello,

I think I'm missing something on my throttle linkage. My throttle lever will not stay in the wide open position (12 o'clock), it just returns to about 1/2 throttle (10 o'clock). I know I have a spring on the governor, but have a dropped another spring somewhere? No problems putting the throttle in the low position (9 o'clock), but the throttle will not stay wide open or anywhere above 1/2 throttle. Thanks.

I just went through this. There are actually two springs down where the throttle rod has the elbow/dog-leg. One of them is on the (quadrant arm) rod itself and can be adjusted for spring preload by loosening the two quadrant arm bolts. The other is the throttle return spring previously mentioned in the other post.

Dell made no comments about this. Are you so awed by him that you thank him in every post?

My software fills in the blanks with a drop-down menu. Since I had thanked Dell in a previous post in my name field it popped up when I hit the first letter of my signature. I just happened to have hit the arrow key one too many times. Sorry.

I had the same problem with an 8N that I'm working on. It would be fine with the throttle about 1/2 way open, but as soon as I tried to open it further it would snap back to the 1/2 way point.

After checking everything else I finally opened up the govenor and found that the balls had worn a groove in the race. Plus the balls themselves were pretty worn. I rebuilt it and it works perfectly now.

Hey Prentice. I don't have a 2nd spring but I'm ok on the throttle. The FO-4 mentions that you check to see that the governor reaches the maximum speed stop as the throttle reaches the last notch. If the governor reaches the max speed stop before the throttle reaches the last notch then you want to adjust that governor spring. It's too short and has a preload. That's the way I read it anyway.

Common problem with these old tractors. When new, the quadrant plate has nice ridges and the throttle lever has a small ball on the bottom to ride on the quadrant. After 50 years this wears down, You can buy a new quadrant plate for about $11.00.... Additionally, check the spring on the bottom of the throttle rod, and ensure that you have maximum down pressure as well as what others have said about the spring to the tranny..... No slop in the Gov spring...I hope you have an IT-FO4 manual,,,get one if you do not....As Dell said...get one it is cheap...
Happy Motoring

There is a small plate attached to the Bell Housing on the right side of he tractor which should have a spring attached thet connectes to the bottom of the throttle rod that you use to set your speed.

on the throttle leaver there is a 3/8 ball, probably worn flat you can remove the throttle lever and opean up the arm that holds the ball turn the ball over and recrimp the arm or replace the ball, ace hardware has them, also check the grooves on the throttle quadrant if they are smooth replace the quadrant hope this helps, what I had done to my 8-n..... ...Jer
