12V Converted Amp Meter

Well, I think I have this thing wired right. When I first start the tractor the meter reads about 15 amps, then the meter goes to zero. If I turn the lights on the meter reads 12 amps. This 9N was converted from 6V to 12V with a single wired alternator.

What should the meter read?

Normally, an ammeter is wired to read the net current flow to or from the battery. As the battery is charged up after starting, the current starts at a nominal value (say 15 amps) and tapers to zero in a few minutes.

Turning the lights on at this point (tractor running above 800 RPM and battery recharged) should NOT cause the ammeter to read +12 amps. It should stay at about zero. If your ammeter is reading +12 amps then you have the ammeter wired "wrong". In this case it is likely measuring the total output of the alternator rather than net flow into the battery.

Alternatively, if the ammeter is reading -12 amps when you turn the lights on, then you may have the ammeter wired correctly, and it is appropriately indicating a problem with your charging circuit; not enough oomph to carry the load of the lights and the battery must "help". Of course, turning the lights on with the tractor engine not running will indicate -12 amps as a normal event with a correctly wired ammeter.

12 amps is quite a bit of current for tractor lights, especially 12 volt tractor lights. You must have some fairly healthy sized bulbs in there.

Well, it sounds 'bout right. Since you changed over to 12 volts, did you change the headlight bulbs from 6V to 12v?

Your meter is read'n 'bout right. I wasn't shure what the amps were for the 12 volt. lights.
