Steering sector gear backlash

I have the 9N steering apart and understand the use of shims to get the "proper" gear lash. What I don't know is what is "proper"? Also, how does all this stay/get lubricated once it is back together?

Actually the 9N/2N steering was good when it's working right. But it had many flaws. Lack of lubrication to some "hard to get" places was one of the flaws. The splash lubrication could only go so far up the steering shaft. My innovative grandfather solved this lubrication problem by attaching a lube line from the test post on the bottom of the hydraulic pump to the steering post. With the PTO engaged you could open the valve to let some oil into the steering column. Shut it off when you know it was lubed. I knew this when oil would run out of steering post. LOL! Here's a pic:

Outer or inner shims/thrust washers are used to correct backlash and end play per what Claus said. You'll know when you have the right combo. Not too tight, not too loose. I had to fabricate some washers at work years ago when I repaired my steering system. My sector gear teeth were worn down so far that I could shave with the teeth. Usually the most wear for this is in the "straight forward" steering position which is in the middle of the sector gears. I had some chipped teeth as well just like the ones in my mouth. LOL!

I got lucky and was able to find some good used sector gears and match pinion (important). I purchased a complete upper steering assembly at a boneyard for $125. I think new gears and pinion are $365. So hopefully yours are ok.

Your local New Holland dealer may be able to order you the size thrust washers you need.

While you're in there, look at the upper and lower steering bearings and the race they sit in. Replace if needed. Also you'll want new 1/2 bushings (4 ea) and new rope seals/packing for the sector gears. To keep from leaking. This is a lot of bull work so you might as well to it right so you don't haffta go through this again in your lifetime.

Purchase the FO-4 manual, that'll help. Sorry for being so long winded.

It splashes up from the tranny.... Backlash, whatever feels good to you....Or, what you are willing to put up with....The older tractors are not noted for their steering. Ford did not fix it until the 8N design.
I suggest you get a hold of an IT-FO-4 Manual, it outlines the steering for the 2/9N.
