8-N Newly rebuilt motor, rebuilt carb, new plugs, points, condenser, rotor, dist. cap, coil, new wires in the right order 1-2-4-3 (Dell), getting plenty of new fuel to carb. Does not help to adjust carb. Does not help any to mess with timing. Idles pretty good, surges and misses at higher rpms and will not pull a load??? Lets try again, any ideas!! Thanks!!

Ralph..... ....you write "Idles pretty good, surges and misses at higher rpms and will not pull a load???" Sounds like a governor problem to me. Have you checked? Simple to do. DISCONNECT eather springloaded end of the carb throttle shaft to governor lever while engine is idleing. Then jazz your motor by hand to high rpms. If still missing, its not your governor, its your sparkies..... ..... Dell

If the camshaft was replaced, I understand the timing markes are out of whack on some of the new ones.

What Swavo said - however surging (or hunting) with your description would indicate a vacuum leak. Either from the carburetor to the manifold or more likely from the manifold to the block. Surging occurs generally when demands are placed on the engine, rpm's rise which (and if a vacuum leak) causes the fuel to be mixed with outside air and thins the mix. The engine and governor can't cope with this mix as it isn't combustible enough for efficient operation. When the tractor then looses rpm's from this - then it will pick up speed when the rpm's drop (lower vacuum) but when it tries to regain the set rpm the cycle starts all over again.

My WAG is check your points gap. Mine closed up on me and gave pretty much the same symptoms you have. Cheap and easy to do. HTH

sounds like weak spark (bad coil), or the centrifical advance could be sticking.

The advance should be the plate that the points mount to. You should have a spring on it to pull it back to idol possition. That plate should twist some.
