Just had the starter on my 1951 8n rebuilt by a local starter and alt. shop in October of last year. A few days ago it started acting up again it would not engage it just sit their and whirl.I could findly get it to start but I would have to rock the tractor a little and then it would be okay and start for a while . I decided to take it off and see what was going on. The starter gear is all chewed up. It's not on the sides it's right in the middle. I took it back to the shop to have them look at it and they say it's the flywheel. They say I need a new flywheel that the flywheel is chewing up the starter gear. This starter as been on the tractor for as long as I have owned it and the starter gear wasn't chewed up last time. Could they have done something wrong when they rebuilt it to cause this to happen

Hello Paul,

You don't need a "new flywheel" but what you need is a new ring gear. This fits on the outside of the flywheel and has been damaged for quite a while - thus damaging the Bendix gear on the starter.

You'll have to split the tractor to replace it (unfortunately). You can check the damage by removing the starter and looking in with a flashlight. I imagine you'll see a lot of "chewed-up" teeth.

Regards,
L and C Ranch
