I have replace the points, coil, plugs, rotor, dist. cap and plug wires and the tractor will still erratically start missing badly. Moving the plug wires on the left side of the dist. (if you are facing it) will smooth things up but not always. There is good mechanical connection on the plug wire ends (both). The best luck I have had is take the plugs wire loose, pull off the coil, dist. cap and rotor and then put it all back togather. What am I missing here...???

You might try using solder on the plug wire ends at the distributor. Those crimp on terminals that come with the wire sets can leave a poor electrical connection.

Like Evil Steve said (#2 on his list) make sure you have solid copper wires, not carbon core automotive wires. Really makes a difference.

ASSUMING your compression is fine, I would suspect one or more of the following:

1) Points gap slipped when you tightened the set screw (common problem)

2) Plug wires are not solid copper (i.e., you are using off-the-shelf automobile resistance wires)

3) bad condenser or coil (they occasionally are bad even new out of the box - dam# aftermarket parts)

4) Poor electrical connections - check EVERY wire for clean, bright, tigh connections

5) Worn distributor bushings (i.e., your distribuor shaft is floppin' around causing your points to open at diffring gaps).

6) rotor making poor connection to cap

7) Poor timing (you didn't mention whether you have a front or sde mount distributor)

8) Spark plugs are not "hot" range - use Autolite 437s r equivvalent

9) Poor aftermarket dist cap (mine fires on only 1/2 of the cap leads which means I have to perform a tune-up and scrape the carbon off my leads after about 10-15 hours run-time)

10) If above not helps, you may have a fuel starvation problem. Check the 3 fuel screens, carb adjustments, etc.

... if your tractor has been converted to 12 volt, you may be boiling your coil causing it to start malfunctioning after 10-20 minutes. Caused by improper 12v conversion.
