I just rebuilt my pump and reinstalled it in the tractor. I got it all buttoned up, went around back to install the PTO shaft and can't get it in all the way, I lack about 8" of getting it in. The manual said to crank the engine over a few turns to help align it. No luck.

Any help would be great.

Randy,

I have a 2N and last year I pulled the pump out to get at other stuff. When I reassembled, I read in the manual to leave the pump bolts loose and then work the shaft into it while rotating the shaft. This would allow free alignment and let the pump move enough to get engagement of the spline. It worked great and I had no problem at all. Once engaged I then tightened everything up.

One thing I did that wasn't in the manual was to use a floor jack under the pump to give me a 3rd hand. This worked well too.

Hope you have the same success that I did.

Randy,
I found it easier to re-install the PTO shaft before I re-installed the top cover. This allowed me to manipulate the piston in the pump by hand, and my shaft slid straight in. If you don't want to remove the cover again, you can reach in through an inspection port and try it (while someone else slides in the shaft), or try rotating the shaft (which will rotate the pistons) until it slides through.

Randy, did you try putting the shaft in before you tighened up the housing bolts? If not, loosen all the bolts to just bearly hand tight, put the shaft in, crank the engine over a few times then torque the bolts. HTH....
