Hello,

I had a post about a Craftsman and Husky riding mower last week and both models where not recommended by the board. Anyone have the low end JD L-100 for 1499.99? How is it? Is it a good riding mower? The only think I need this mower for is for mowing, not anything else like people use garden tractors for. I have my 8n, but it's too much tractor to mow 1.5 acres with trees and a house.

Hi,

Saw your post on the tractor forum about the JD L120 that you bought a few weeks back. The 120s that are being marketed at Home Depots in Canada come with the 20hp Briggs and Stratton V-Twin engine; the L110 comes with the 17.5 hp Kohler overhead valve engine; the L130 comes with the 23hp Kohler Command V-Twin engine. Would you recommend the 20hp Briggs and Stratton engine over the Kohler 17.5 hp? Is the 23hp Kohler overkill for a one-acre lot? I would like to put on the 42" snowthrower attachment, but am trying to balance the increased cost versus the additionaol hp...

thanks - matt

I don't know about the performance with a snowblower (I'm in Houston, TX), but a 17.5 HP mower is plenty for a 1 acre lot. Any of those engines will outlast the mower.

Dale, that is misinformtion. I checked with Deere before I bought mine. They are made at the same building in Tennessee that their other products are made. Philip.

Hello all,

I bought a used murray 18.5 hp 46 inch cut with the hydro tranny 2 years ago. I just needed it to cut my lawn and nothing else, well of course I use it for other things now. I put a 2" ball on it and I have used it to move my 18' boat around quite a bit.I also hooked it up to a old bed spring with cinder blocks on it to grade some yard. it works well, cuts good, and does more than I expecteded. I also bought it with the thought in mind that it is disposable and if I get 5 years I am happy, but It is already 5 yrs old and still runs perfectly.

Chris

Prentice, I bought a JD L120 4 weeks ago. The lawn tractor is built in Tenessee along with thier other products. If you are only mowing a lawn, I think it is a pretty good choice. The tractor, engine, and hydrostat drive seems top quality. I think they saved alot of money on a below average mower deck. The deck only has one attachement point in the front at the center. Not the easiest to level. Mows pretty good, but if I go too fast, it leaves streaks. Not sure what it is from, but I suspect it is the front tires laying the grass down before it gets cut. Consumer reports listed the JD L120 #1 in its latest comparison. I highly recommend you get this report if you are looking to buy. I also have a JD LX188. Much better tractor, but also more than double the cost. Let me know if you have any questions about the JD L120. Philip.

I have the Scotts 17hp / 42" same as the JD sabre. The motor is a Kohler, and it runs very good, I do have a slight, intermittant ticking noise in the engine when cold. I have no problems with the hydrostatic transmission, and no problems with the lawn tractor. If I had to do it again, I'm not sure I would get the kohler. I like the mower a lot, and now that they are green I like them even more. I mow just over an acre of thick grass (with lots of weeds),and lots of hills, and have owned the tractor for just over 2 years.

Hi Prentice,

I bought a Scott’s 16/42 from HD three years ago and have been very satisfied with it. It is not as stout as a real JD but it cost a lot less and all I do with it is cut grass. The hydrostatic trans on mine pulls fine but I doubt if it would pull an implement or a heavy cart. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

Prentice: I bought last year a JD Sabre with a 17.5 Kohler, 42" deck. The Sabre is the same mower as the 100 series from John Deere. Last year JD replaced the Sabres with the 100 series. I have had to bring the darn thing in for warranty service 3 times already. Something is always wrong with it. The Kohler engine seems good, but the rest of it is made really cheap in my opinion. I wish I would have waited, saved up some more money and bought a higher quality mower. For one, the hydrostatic tranny on these mowers is soooo weak. It can bearly get up a slight incline. Can't pull a little cart hardly at all. It struggles in everything it does. If others here have a good luck with these JD/Home Depot mowers, well I am happy for ya, but mine has been a royal pain in the rear end. Enough said.

The only 'garden tractor' I ever bought came with a mowing deck and a tow behind set of cultivators...

11hp AgWay 12/40LT made by Murray...

$25 at a lawn sale...Delivered...

Dunno what year it was made, but I have had it four years now and it is still going with new belts and a battery...

Still wondering what I will do with the $1400 I saved...

;-)

Go and look at the Bolens garden tractors - not much more money and they can accept ground engaging implements - rototillers and such.

Funny, I was just looking at one today....You have to keep in mund that for better or worse, Adam P really likes vintage garden tractors....
OK my thought on that exact model you mentioned is,,, It is not built (nor are any of them now a days) as well as the older ones. The steel is not as good, they have no rear end, (take a look at a '60's Panzer or even a cub cadet in the same vintage and you'll know what I mean). I'm not saying you'll do more with it than you say, but boy, I would like it to be rugged enough to where if I run over a "root bump" it would hold up like the older ones do. And for $1500? wow Just my respectful thoughts,
Adam P
PS reply, I'd love to know yours....

My Sunday paper had this unit advertised for the same price at HD with a free canopy. You had to send in a coupon and have it shipped to you from JD. Hurry! Free canopy offer expires soon:^)
