I've got some old rim problems that I'm welding my way out of. Now what's a good paint combo? What kinda primer with what kinda paint. I've got a can of white line paint which has got to be one of the toughest paints going. It can stand up to being run over, snowplows, extreme hot and cold and it stays put pretty well. How's about a coat of this on my rims with a top coat of standard Grey over it ? Possible problems that I see are , Will it stick to steel very well? What primers are compatable with it? Any comments are welcome. Reagrds, Rich

They have paint for these rims that will last for decades. I don't remember anyone complaining the paint doesn't last. I'm not sure you are doing the next guy or the guy after that any favors by putting some of that white or yellow line paint on there especially if the gray won't stick but a year or so. Who knows?

I agree with Mike C on this. I would use regular enamal paint. Plenty of posts on that around here too, as "regular" can mean many differant things to many differant people....

Rich,
Many years ago I worked for PPG Industries in the industrial coatings division. One of the things that we sold was line striping paint.

You can paint it on something and it will hold up fair, however you won't have much luck getting a top coat to adhere to it. It is not designed to be topcoated or used with a primer. You will also find that the finish will not be glossy or even, and it does not flow out smoothly (it does not have to on a road surface).

If you notice, most streets get repainted every year. EPA regulations changed the formula of line striping paint about 15 years ago and about 1 year in an area with 4 seasons is all you'll get on a road.

Many local and state DOT's have gone to a newer striping system that is not a paint at all, but rather a tape system with special adhesives.

You would be better off with a good primer and finish coat.

my father got some of that parking lot line paint in the spray cans a while back from a discount store. it was yellow and for a while everything around here was getting painted yellow. he had the rear frame of his nissan all yellow, numerous undercairrage parts of my mothers dodge aries, all the vehicle battery boxes he could find. most everything was geting painted with that stuff, luckly he finaly ran out of it. but it worked great, nice and thick and tough. i was very impressed with how it held up on the battery boxes of our cars and tractors, its very resistant to most everything, is still flexible, and sticks to any surface for the most part. i never tried it on rims but i cant see why it wouldnt work, however i would probably just do the surface that the tire and tube cover, thats where most corrosion comes from. and just so everyone is clear on this, we are talking about the type of paint that they put the stripes on roads and parking lots with, not the stuff that they paint temporary lines marking utilities and such, that stuff wont hold up long at all
