Larry...
You said in another thread that you were not going to post here anymore, Don't go away. Many of us have benefited from your presence here. Even if some are afraid to post their email address, your response on the board is helpful to the rest of us.

I believe that the Hide email address button should default to "No"... this may be the problem, Maybe Kim will want to re-think that option.

I've only had my 9N tractor now for about 4 months, bought my second, an 8N, a month ago... I don't know what I would have done if it hadn’t been for the help of You, Dell, Claus, and many, many others!

Respectfully,
Robert Hargis
Mansfield, Tx.

$.02 time.
I too, totally agree with Mr. Hargis.
I am "new" to "old" tractors (only had my '46 2N for three weeks), and I've already had a number of questions which were answered by the members of this forum.
Yesterday I was wondering about the use of synthetic oils in these machines and thought I might post a question to Dell or Claus.
For a change, the archive was actually working and I found that this subject has been discussed at length. (and ad-nauseum).
No need to bother the forum experts with a question which was answered in the archives.
If I had asked, there is no doubt that I would have recived multiple responses offering advice or opinion.
Everyone's contribution is valuable and GREATLY appreciated.
We "newbies" need you guys out there to pass along your knowledge and wisdom and we thank you for your patience.
Please stick around!
Mark A. Groves,
Croton, Ohio

True, but if you search the archives carefully just about every question has been asked and answered. I would rather see a redundant question asked by someone new and make them comfortable with their tractor as opposed to looking through the archives and hoping to hit the correct information.

Besides, the real joy is helping others do what you have already done (and having other help you do what you have not done). All of us have our "blind spots" on things that we just don't get and need a little extra hand in those areas. After all, if we all understood everything we wouldn't need to be here.

A lot of the learning process on this board reminds me of military instruction; you get it once, and after that, shame on you if it didn't take! For example, leveling the bubbles on an 81mm mortar; we were told how to do it, why it was critical, and what would happen if they weren't level. The first time I yelled "Up!" meaning I was ready to fire, the instructor checked my sights, saw the bubbles weren't level, had me break the weapon down, lift the 50 lb base plate over my head, and do two laps around the far aiming stake. I didn't make that mistake again. The fact that these guys are willing to share their knowledge is in the first place extraordinary, and if they want to be sarcastic in the process, fine with me. Some of my best education was often preceeded by "Listen up, s---head.....".

I think another contributing factor is that after anyone has visited a forum for a while you see the same topics appear repeatedly. Why? Easy... new people are seeking information and often don't know about archives or are seeking more up-to-date info. Unfortunately, for some this I guess can become too routine while for the rookie, it's like a pot of gold.

Heck, I've only been here about a month and I've already seen quite a few people bring up the "45min-1hour doesn't run" - "replace coil" issue and that was ME about 2 weeks ago, and let me tell ya... I was SO glad people like Dell, Rob, and others were willing to repeat it once more so I could get that thing going. I am sure it had been asked a million times before but they still came to my aid.

New users, old users. Any forum needs them both!

Robert -

I agree with everything - including the "hide" defaulting to "no".

As for the contributors leaving, coming, leaving, etc., unfortunately I've seen that on many forum boards - no matter the area of interest that the forum targeted. And it is too bad... especially for us new-comers. Many times those people have tremendous amounts of information... information us newer folks need. It's everyday knowledge for them, but it's often unexplainably valuable to us who are simply seeking a direction to getting our new tractor rolling and are seeking info the manuals don't provide.

It's often easy to misinterpret the writings of any of us as online text doesn't contain voice inflections. We were discussing "smiley face type icons" in another thread about forum features and one thing those do help is project your intent of a comment - whether it be happy, sarcastic, or mean. It allows the view an interpretative signal and it's amazing how a little smiley face with a wink can help let the recipient know they aren't being flamed.

As for me, well... I've never really seen any sarcasm here that I couldn't laugh at and I can even accept some rookie initiation with no problem. The basis for me is that there is SO much I DON'T know and there are tons of good folks who do. As long as they're willing, I want to talk with those people.

Thanks guys!

-shaun

We must have been in the military about the same era. I don't think DI's are allowed to use that language anymore, too many spoiled brats writing letters to momma who then wrote to congressmen who threatened the pentagon brass with budget cuts. Gotta be politically correct,,, even in a foxhole.

I was in active duty 1967-70; Reserves 1971-91. I spent all my time in SF; my next to last year, against my better judgement but at the request of one of the few officers I truly respected, was as a 1SG of a support company. My first day on the job, I told the young troops "At ease, smoke if you got 'em". Well, they all got bug-eyed on me, and one finally said "First Sergeant, you can't say that; it could be construed to mean that you are encouraging the troops to smoke." Yep, time for me to retire!
